How to use the Rune Forge in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

This guide will help you learn how to build the Rune Forge in Ravensthorpe and how to use it in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to balance and tweak your gear and stats!

Note: The Rune Forge only works with the runes from the base game, not the ones added with the expansions. Because of that fact, I will only focus your attention on these runes in the guide.

What are Runes

You have been collecting runes and applying their perks to our gear for nearly two years now. As of this patch, you can also extract perks from your gear – weapons and armor, and create runes with them to slot into other weapons and gear.

Runes can be acquired in many ways such as loot and rewards or purchased from vendors. To place a rune into a gear, that piece of gear must have a rune slot.

Runes are split into two main types depending on where you can slot them.

Weapon Runes can only be applied in rune slots on weapons. They usually add a unique perk or boost.

Armor Runes can only be slotted into armor pieces and they focus on defenses usually – like improving your resistances and increasing protection.

What is the Rune Forge and how to build it

With the release of Update 1.6.1 Ubisoft added to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla a brand new structure that you can build in your settlement Ravensthorpe in England – the Rune Forge.

The Rune Forge will become available to you automatically as soon as you patch your game to 1.6.1 and cover the requirement for your settlement – it needs to reach Level 4.

When you meet these criterias, look for a new prompt in the eastern part of Ravensthorpe. There you will find a large tent with the usual sign in front of it. The NPC’s name is Hauk. He will be the one that will engrave runes for you.

To build the Rune Forge, you will need the usual Foreign Supply. 600 of them. You can earn Foreign Supply by completing River Raids.

At this moment there are no available upgrades to the Rune Forge building available. I assume Ubisoft may add this option later on when they expand the Rune Forge to be able to extract and work with runes from the expansions.

Building the Rune Forge in AC Valhalla

As it is currently in 1.6.1, the Rune Forge has a pretty limited functionality and is mainly serving as a convenience tool to help you mix and match your gear in the search for new and fun builds.

How to use the Rune Forge

Using the Rune Forge in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is extremely easy and simple. When asking Hauk to engrave runes for you, you don’t lose anything, just silver. And you can always go get more silver.

When you open the Rune Forge menu, you will see two main tabs – Engrave and Sell.

The Sell Tab is self-explanatory. Here you can sell any runes you have aquired in your journeys. There is no difference in the price you will get from the Rune Forge compared to any of the other vendors in the game.

The Engrave tab is the true highlight feature of the Rune Forge. Here you can copy a perk from a weapon or armor piece that you own and create a new rune with that same perk.

The runes that Hauk creates for you occupy the first rune slot – the special diamond-shaped (or if you prefer “square”) one. The shape of the runes suggests that as well, of course.

Hauk cannot create brand new runes with new perks for you. He can only copy gear perks and create runes with them from your current existing inventory. And he can only copy perks onto runes from some of your gear.

Eivor talks to Hauk at the Rune Forge

The collection of armor pieces and weapons that the Rune Forge offers to use as source to engrave onto a new rune is entirely dependent on the items you own. And not all items you own can be used in the engraving process.

What this means is that the only way to modify the inventory at the Rune Forge, is to obtain more gear pieces. Luckily for you, that’s where my guides come to help you:

Reminder: the Rune Forge does not support all items from the game, only the base game gear you find in the world. But it would not hurt for you to complete your collection now and be prepared for when (eventually!) Ubisoft decides to add more items to the Rune Forge’s inventory. Store-bought items also do not appear in the Rune Forge.

The runes’ perks that you slot into a piece of gear do not remove its native perk. These runes add an additional perk to the features of that weapon or armor item.

You will not lose the item you are using as a source. This process costs silver, though. And you can create runes with the same perk from the same piece of gear you own as many times as you want.
