How to get the Wolf School Gear in The Witcher 3

Vulkk by Vulkk|

This guide will show you how to start the Wolf School Gear Quest, where to find and how to obtain all six diagrams and how to craft the armor and weapons from the Wolven set in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt!

This guide is up-to-date for The Witcher 3 Next-Gen version (Update 4.04)

What is the Wolf School Witcher Gear

The School of the Wolf in the world of The Witcher is where Geralt belongs. He and his fellow witchers occupy the old fortress of Kaer Morhen in Kaedwen.

In The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, the oldest current member of this school is Vesemir, who is accepted as a father figure and is among the most respected witchers. He is good friends with Geralt.

The Wolf School Gear set was added to the game in a free DLC by CD Projekt Red. Fun fact is that for many years this set was bugged and unobtainable for most players. More on that later in the guide.

The Wolf school gear is suitable for light fast-paced combat with a sword paired with signs usage. The gear pieces all have bonuses boosting Sign Intensity and Adrenaline Points gain.

The Wolf School gear set requires level 14 in the base game and can be crafted by any Armorer and Blacksmith, even the Journeyman tier is enough. I’ll explain more about crafting in the dedicated crafting section below.

How to start the Wolf School Scavenging Hunt Quest

The map fragment that starts the side quest “Scavenging Hunt: Wolf School Gear” can be purchased from the Blacksmith at Lindenvale, in Velen. This is directly to the east of Crow’s Perch and is not far away.

The Blacksmith may not be available during nighttime. When you browse his shop, look for “Slightly Torn Notes by Hieronymus on the witcher Elgar”. Purchase it and open to read it from your inventory, in the Other tab. This will start the Scavenging Hunt quest for you.

There is no need to go out of your way to find the map fragment that will start the quest for you. When you find the diagrams, this quest will be completed for you automatically. This location and crafter NPC are also mentioned in my guide to the Merchants in the Witcher 3 you have to visit!

Visual Overview of the Gear Set

The Wolf School gear set makes Geralt look like a true adventurer. It’s a medium armor set for level 14 or higher. Ideal pick when you get tired or out-level your White Tiger of the West gear from the Next-Gen Update.

How to start the Wolf School Gear Scavenger Hunt Quest

The Wolf School Set can be obtained by following the walkthrough below to each of the six diagrams for the four armor pieces and the two swords. If you want to, you can purchase the Map Fragment to start this quest.

Visit the Armorer at Kaer Trolde in Skellige and purchase the “Notes on Parchment by Hieronymus on Elgar The Witcher” item. It will be marked with an yellow exclamation mark in the merchant’s inventory.

You will find the Armorer at Kaer Trolde’s small yard right after the bridge. From the Bridge to Kaer Trolde Fast Travel, cross the bridge itself and as soon as you walk through the entrance of the main complex, turn right and go to the small yard.

If you don’t want to bother with the parchment, you can simply follow the instructions below to the diagrams. As soon as you find the first one, you will get the Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear quest.

Where to find the Wolf School Gear Diagrams

All six diagrams, four for armor pieces and two for swords, are available in the area around Kaer Morhen. This means that you have to reach the part of the story in the game that allows you to travel to the home of the School of the Wolf. It doesn’t matter in which order you will visit the locations to get the diagrams.

Wolven Boots, Trousers, Gauntlets and Armor Diagrams Location

The full armor set from the Wolf School Gear is located in the ruins of the old signal tower. This is southwest of Kaer Morhen.

From the Kaer Morhen Fast Travel sign, follow the path down and south, then turn to the north. Right at the crossroads, you can see the tower on a cliff towering (heh) over you.

As you enter the ruins, you can climb up the ladder and open the large box. In it you will find Hieronymus’ Notes. This letter explains what you have to do: activate two parts of a portal and go through it to find the armor set.

Hieronymus Note

Optionally, you can examine the remains behind you. This is a nice little easter Egg CD Projekt Red left for us. This is the bug I referred to earlier. The Wolf School armor was unobtainable for many players for years. The developers fixed that bug and left this funny note.

Near the wooden ladder, on the northeast wall of the tower, you will find an inactive portal. It’s missing a power cell. You can find a power cell sittiing on the outside of the north wall of the tower. To get it, head back to the entrance, but before you exit the ruin, turn right and go around to the outside.

Go back to the portal and place the power cell in its place. To activate the portal, use Aard sign (Push).

Use Aard to activate the portal

Geralt will make a note that this is not enough. There is a second portal to the right from the one that was missing its power cell. This one has a power cell. Just use Aard to activate it.

Now you are ready to jump through the Portal

When you teleport in the new place, there will be a level 23 Wraith waiting for you.

Wraith

Here is a reminder to use Yrden to force the creature to accept a physical form and take a lot more damage from your swords. Quen can be helpful too. Quen is always a helpful sign. Two more recommendations: Moon Dust and Specter Oil. You might not need any of these, but if you are new and if you play on a higher difficulty, these will help a lot.

The Wraith spawns right on top of the skeletal remains, which you will want to loot as soon as you are done fighting.

The Notes you just found will give you clues to the locations of the Steel and Silver Wolven swords.

Wolven Silver Sword Diagram Location

The Silver sword from the Wolf School gear set is in the ruined watchtower, north of Kaer Morhen. Starting again from the Kaer Morhen Fast Travel, head south to the crossroads and then take the path leading north.

How to get to the Ruined Watchtower

Keep the rocks on your right side and the river on your left. Follow the path down to the lake. Then walk on the western shores of the lake with the water on your right side until you reach the ruined watchtower.

When you arrive at the ruins, another level 23 Wraith will wait for you right on top of the skeletal remains you need to loot. You know the drill.

When you are done with the Wraith, loot the remains to obtain the Wolven Silver Sword and a Journal. That Journal is your clue to the final piece of this set – the Wolven Steel Sword.

Wolven Steel Sword Diagram Location

The Steel Sword from the Wolf School Set is inside the ruins of The Bastion. This is an old fortress where Geralt and his fellow witchers used to train when they were young. It’s located directly to the west of Kaer Morhen.

You can take the same path south from Kaer Morhen’s Fast Travel to the crossroads, then go north and find the stone stairs and pathway through the forest. It will lead you to The Bastion.

How to get to the Bastion

Inside the ruins, there will be a few more level 23 Wraiths waiting for you. You can take them one by one as they are spread far from each other. If this is the first time you visit The Bastion, a side quest will automatically start for you when you walk past the entrance. It’s not related to the gear set and tasks you with defeating the Wraiths. You would do that anyway, most likely.

The skeletal remains you need to loot for the Wolven Steel Sword are among the ruined wooden structure in the middle of the inner courtyard

Finding this will also complete the quest “Scavenging Hunt: Wolf School Gear”.

How to Craft the Wolf School Gear set

This is a Tier 1 (basic) of the Wolf School Gear Set, so it has minimal requirements for crafting. You can visit any Journeyman Blacksmith (or higher) to craft the silver and steel swords for you. You can visit also any Amateur Armorer for the armor set pieces.

Crafting Materials Requirements

The materials to craft the armor pieces and the two swords from the Wolf School gear set are relatively easy to find. You can purchase all of them from the merchants that you visist to craft the diagrams into items. You can also dismantle things or craft the required “ingredients” yourself.

With this being an early to mid-game witcher set, the crafting materials required are nothing special. You can easily find, buy or dismantle items to get the materials listed at the end of the list for each item – things like Monster Eye, Monster Essense, Leather Straps and others. The most expensive items include Meteorite Ore and Meteorite Silver Plate.

Meteorite Ore

Meteorite Ore
Can be looted, purchased or crafted. You can dismantle Meteorite Ingots into Meteorite Ore.

Meteorite Silver Plate

Meteorite Silver Plate
Can be purchased from Armorers and other craftsmen and merchants. You can also craft it yourself from Meteorite Silver Ingots.

Where to find an Armorer and a Blacksmith

It doesn’t matter which NPCs you visit to craft the items, but if you are not sure, I will mention two easily accessible and already available to you from your previous journeys on The Continent.

The Blacksmith in Novigrad can make both swords for you. He is on the northern side of the open market area. This is just west and south of Hierarch Square.

If the NPC is not there, meditate for a bit. This one works on a regular daily shift and if you visit at night, the shop will be closed.

You can visit Crow’s Perch or Kaer Trolde to find an Armorer for the other four pieces of the set. Here is the location of Fergus Graem and Yoana.

Wolf School Gear Set Stats

This set requires level 14. It is a medium armor gear and is ideal for a mixed build with light and fast-paced attacks and signs usage. Being a jack of all trades, the Wolf School witcher gear set will not excel in any of the categories, but allows for great versatility and fun gameplay experience.

How to get the Legendary Version of the Wolven set

The Wolf School Witcher Gear set is available in New Game Plus (NG+) in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. The Scavenging Quest and all diagrams are located in the exact same places as in the normal game.

In NG+ this set is called Legendary Wolven witcher set. The word “legendary” is added to acknowledge that you are acquiring the NG+ version of the set. It has the same type of stats, but offers higher values across the board. It also requires the same types of crafting materials. You can follow this guide for NG+ as well.

The Legendary Wolven gear looks exactly the same as the one from the normal game. There might be more monsters in some places where you have to fight, but this shouldn’t be a problem for a seasoned witcher.

This concludes the guide on how to find and craft the diagrams of the Wolf School Gear Set in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. If you want more, I recommend you take a look at The Witcher 3 Gear Sets Guides collection available here on VULKK.com!
