This guide will show you how to solve the mirrors puzzle from the late main quest called “The Sunstone” in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt!
The Sunstone is a level 28 main quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. You cannot skip or avoid it. You get it as a sub-quest to the main quest “Battle Preparations” (also recommended for level 28).
For The Sunstone, you have to explore the elven ruins on the north side of Ard Skellig, the main island of the Skellige archipelago. You agree to assist Philippa Eilhart, one of the members of The Lodge of Sorceresses.
After you arrive at the entrance of the Ancient Crypt, which by the way you can only access by taking a boat around the shores of Ard Skellig, you have to explore the crypt to find The Sunstone.
The shortest distance to the Ancient Crypt is by taking a boat from Kaer Trolde Harbor and going clockwise around the island.
The path through the crypt is not exactly linear, but it’s hard to get lost. Whichever direction you take, you will always end up on the right spot sooner or later. It’s easier if you just follow Philippa.
Of course, exploring the cave will yield some extra loot from a few chests. The Ancient Crypt Place of Power is in here and you can access during or after the quest.
This guide will focus on the mirrors puzzle and how to turn the three mirrors so you can complete this quest. The mirrors are located in a giant underground open area with a bright white object hanging from the ceiling in the middle between the three mirrors.
Overview of the large cavern with the mirrors
On the image below I have labeled the mirrors. I also refer to them as left (1), right (2) and back (3) as that’s how they appear when you first see them from the entrance of this giant cavern.
How to turn the mirrors
Each of the mirrors has a lever mechanism on its back. To interact with it and turn it around, get close to it, on the back side, and press the corresponding button you see on your screen. Default for PC is E (I only play the game on PC). Geralt will position himself next to the mechanism and pull the lever.
It doesn’t matter in which order you turn the mirrors as long as they point in the right direction by the end. In the next part of the guide, I go 1 – 3 – 2. And I use these as references, but it’s not a requirement to solve this puzzle.
How to set up the Left Mirror (1)
From the entrance to the cavern, turn left and climb up the stairs to get to the mirror on the left side.
By default, the mirror is pointing to the left. Use the lever and turn the Left Mirror (1) to the right, as shown in the image below.
How to set up the Back Mirror (3)
From the Left Mirror (1), jump down, go through the middle of the cavern and turn left to climb up to get to the Back Mirror (3).
As you approach the Back Mirror (3), you will be attacked by a level 28 Ghost figure. This is a spectral form of an elven warrior. It’s not a boss or anything special and shouldn’t give you trouble defeating it.
After you take care of the Ghost, turn to interact with the mirror. Point the Back Mirror (3) to the right as shown in the image below.
How to set up the Right Mirror (2)
As you are on the southern end of the cavern, and you are looking towards the entrance from where you came, the Right Mirror (2) will now be on your left side.
After you turn the Back Mirror (3), go left and jump down. Instead of going back to the middle, run alongside the wall on the left. You will pass below the mirror and reach a hard-left turn, which reveals an elevated tunnel leading up to the Right Mirror (2).
Climb up, turn left, and follow the staircase until you reach the mirror.
At the top of the stairs, with the mirror just to your left, you will get ambushed by another level 28 Ghost. This one has a heady 2-handed axe. You’d be better off avoiding his hits rather than trying to block.
Stand behind it and turn the Right Mirror (2) to the right. This will complete the puzzle.

How to set up the Mirrors in The Sunstone quest of The Witcher 3
This is a quick step-by-step summary of how to solve the mirrors puzzle in the Ancient Crypt in Skellige. The puzzle is part of The Sunstone main quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.
Instructions
- As you enter the large cavern with the mirrors, turn to your left. Climb the stairs. Jump up the ledge to reach the platform the left mirror is placed on.
- Turn the left mirror to the right by using the level on the back of the mirror.
- Jump down in front of the left mirror and go to the middle of the cavern.
- At the crossroads, turn left and head for the back mirror. Jump up to get on top of the platform where the back mirror is.
- Defeat the Ghost warrior that spawns near the back mirror.
- Turn the back mirror to the right.
- Jump down on the left side of the back mirror and run along the wall.
- Make a hard left turn as you pass the last mirror. Climb up to the elevated tunnel and immediately turn left.
- At the top of the stairs another Ghost warrior will ambush you.
- Turn the right mirror to the right side. This will solve the puzzle.
- Go to Philippa Eilhard to continue the quest.
Notes
The mirrors are labeled as Left, Back and Right as seen from the entrance to the cavern, which is on the northern side. It doesn't matter in which order you turn the mirrors. What's important is that each mirror points to the right as you stand behind it. Don't just follow Philippa in the elven ruins. Explore on your own during or after the quest to discover interesting loot, a hidden treasure and a Place of Power!
