What are Bombs for in The Witcher 3
Bombs are consumable items that are used against your enemies. Some bombs do damage, others apply debuffs, a few of them also have utility effects, and a handful of them can be used to destroy monster nests.
Bombs have three tiers: basic, enhanced and Superior. Each version is more powerful and with an added extra bonus or perk. The Bombs occupy the right slot with Potions and Decoctions in the middle and Oils on the left in your Inventory:
Bombs can turn the tide of the battle or help you save Roach from vicious enemies if you use them in the right moment.
Bomb formulas can be found randomly when looting chests or other objects, buying them from merchants or herbalists, or during/after a quest of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.
If you are new to the game, I recommend you take a good look at The Witcher 3 DOs and DONTs guide for a great collection of beginner-friendly tips and recommendations to give you a good start.
How to get the ingredients and craft Bombs
To craft a bomb, you first need to acquire its recipe (formula). Then you can open the Alchemy menu to determine what ingredients you need to gather to craft the bomb.
Some bomb formulas can be found randomly while others have a 100% guaranteed spot to get them from. In the next segment of the guide, I will show you the exact location of all confirmed spawns and/or purchasable bomb formulas in the game.
You can obtain herbs and alchemy items by exploring the world, looting chests or animals, and finding hidden treasures. You can also purchase many of the ingredients from herbalists and merchants.
Saltpeter,
Stammelford’s Dust, and
Alchemists’ Powder are the base ingredients for the basic, enhanced, and superior bombs respectively. You’ll have enough of these if you just play the game. You can purchase them from multiple merchants as well.
To craft the Enhanced Bomb, you need the Basic version of the same potion. To craft the Superior tier, you need the Enhanced version.
Most Superior Bombs require rare items that can be acquired by defeating specific monsters, as well as one of the following special alchemy ingredients listed below:
Aether
Nigredo
Quebrith
Rebis

The Best and Most Important Bombs to get early
As your adventure progresses, you’ll learn what’s the best Bomb to use in most situations. Some Bombs will be required more often than others so upgrade them as soon as you can. Using the right bomb in the right situation can make a difference, especially when playing on Death March difficulty.
The Grapeshot is usually the most used one in general. It does a good amount of area damage while it’s also able to destroy monster nests. It is easy to be overpowered by a large group of enemies when you’re early in the game. Hitting all of them with a single bomb will increase your chance of survival.
Some monsters have powerful and annoying magical abilities that make it feel like you’re in the middle of a boss fight. The Dimeritium bomb will block these abilities, giving you fifteen seconds to do as much damage as possible.
Wraiths and Werewolves can be some of the most deceitfully hard-to-kill monsters. Moon Dust can turn the tide of battle in your favor. Its use is very situational but you’ll be more than happy to have them already in your inventory when encountering these foes.
At first, it might not look like much but Northern Wind has saved me more times than I can count. Freezing enemies for four seconds gives you enough time to reposition, heal, use a sign, consume a Potion, or throw a different type of bomb at the immobilized enemies.
All Bombs are useful but these four are the ones that are most universally helpful, especially in the earlier stages of the game. Many monsters have weaknesses from a specific bomb or bombs. Remember to check out the Bestiary before a tough fight with a strong opponent or a boss encounter.
If you like the gameplay using Bombs, you should strongly consider getting the Manticore witcher gear set to make Bombs a viable part of your gameplay at high levels as well.
