What is Ofieri Gear and who is it for
The Ofieri gear in The Witcher 3 can be interpreted as a set because it creates a complete ensemble when you equip all pieces together. However, it’s not a witcher set and does not provide set bonuses as the typical witcher sets around that level do. Examples are Manticore set and all Grandmaster witcher sets.
The Ofieri gear was added with the Hearts of Stone expansion. It is a high-level gear for both Geralt and Roach. The achievement “I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool” is granted when you have all the Ofieri pieces either in your inventory or equipped.
The Ofieri armor and swords require you to be level 38 to wear and you will need to first find the diagrams, then bring them to a qualified NPC to craft them for you.
There are actually ten Ofieri gear pieces available in total in the game. You need eight of them to earn the “I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool” achievement. You can get all of them within the constraints of a single quest.
How to get the Ofieri Horse Gear
To obtain the Ofieri gear pieces for Roach, head to northeast Velen and find the Ofieri Merchant Dulla kh’Amanni. He has set up his shop at the Upper Mill.
During your adventures, you may have picked another Treasure Hunt quest in your log (from a notice board), called “Enchanting: Start-Up Costs”. Its marker is also at the Upper Mill. This is the quest that will unlock the Runewright for you and allow you to enchant your swords and armor with runes for additional effects.
This quest is separate from the Ofieri Armor quest and achievement. They are related only to the fact that they were both released with the Hearts of Stone expansion.
After a brief conversation, the Ofieri merchant will invite you to race him. To prompt that, ask him about his horse. You need to race and win against him. The quest is called “Races: Swift as the Western Winds”.
If you fail to win the race, you don’t get the saddle and you see a brief unique piece of cinematic and dialogue from the Ofieri merchant.
If you fail to win the race, you may have one more option to earn this saddle. It will come later in your game, at the Tourney Grounds area near Beauclair. You need to get access to Toussaint, which is part of the Blood and Wine expansion. Visit the Blacksmith there to see if he sells this item.
A far simpler and quicker option is just to reload your saved file and try the race again. It’s not too hard to win, provided Roach is equipped with decent gear to allow her to run long enough without having to take a breather.
Winning the race will grant you the Ofieri Stock Saddle gear piece.
You can purchase the Ofieri Saddlebags and Ofieri Blinders from the Ofieri merchant. They are relatively cheap, and may not be top gear for Roach, but you need them for the achievement.
How to get the Ofieri Saber(s)
There are two Ofieri swords available in The Witcher 3. Both are Steel Swords. One can be purchased from the merchant, the other one can be crafted by first finding the diagram for it. You can get both, but only one of them will also work for the achievement.
You can simply purchase the Ofieri Decorated Saber from the merchant. In any case, it will not be better than whatever Mastercrafted witcher steel sword you are currently using most likely. And you will likely replace it very soon with the Viper Venomous Steel Sword from the Viper School Gear Set (level 39), which was also released with Hearts of Stone.
To get the Ofieri Saber, purchase the “Diagram: Ofieri Saber” item. It may be worth using it for a couple of levels until you get to 40 and can use your top-tier Grandmaster witcher gear.
Crafting the Ofieri Saber is easy. You will need to visit Master Blacksmith Hattori in Novigrad. Or you can craft it at any of the Blacksmiths in Beauclair if you have access to Toussaint already.
How to get the Ofieri Crossbow
The Ofieri Crossbow exists in two versions in the game. None of them are required for the achievement. But if you want to collect everything, here are the details.
You can purchase the Ofieri Crossbow (Master Tier) from Dulla kh’Amanni at the Upper Mill. This version of the item is blue (Master).
During the main quest from Hearts of Stone called “Open Sesame”, you can loot the Ofieri Crossbow (Relic Tier) from one of the chests down in the crypt after the big fight with Maximilian Borsodi and his men.
How to get the Ofieri Armor Set
After the race, you will return to the Ofieri camp at the Upper Mill. The merchant will explain to you about the missing Ofieri gear diagrams and ask you to help him find them.
You will receive the Treasure Hunt quest called “From Ofier’s Distant Shores”. It’s recommended for level 33. Unless you have been skipping a lot of content in the game, you will likely be at a lot higher level by the time you get to Hearts of Stone. The armor and saber are for level 38. So, no need to rush to do the quest early.
The Ofieri Armor Set consists of four armor pieces:
- Ofieri Scale Armor
- Ofieri Gauntlets
- Ofieri Sharovary
- Ofieri Boots
You can actually find the diagrams on your own, they are in the open world. If you have found one before talking to Dulla kh’Amanni, you will get a slightly different dialogue with him, acknowledging that you have discovered something already.
You can find three of the four diagrams on your own before picking up the quest. You will need to talk to the Ofieri merchant as he will be the only one who can read and translate them for you, so you can then bring them to Master Armorer Yoana at Crow’s Perch to craft them for you.
If you have found some or any of the three available in the open world diagrams first and then talk to the Ofieri merchant at the Upper Mill, skip the next portion and go further down to the section that shows the exact locations of the four diagrams.
If you start the quest first, it will lead you to an underground hideout south of the Upper Mill, in Velen. This location is not accessible if you do not have the quest active. You need to get inside. That’s where one of the Ofieri Armor diagrams is.
You will find the place where the Ofieri merchant was attacked and Geralt will find a trail for you to follow from there.
It will lead you up the hill. Next to a tree there, you will find a body. Examine it and follow the new trail. Some ten steps north you will find that new trail that leads you to the underground hideout.
Inside, you will have to defeat a bunch of level 33 Fallen Knights. Apply the Hanged Man’s Venom oil to your steel sword. Since there are quite a lot of them, items like the Northern Wind Bomb and Grapeshot Bomb might come in handy. The Grave Hag Decoction and Leshen Decoction will also be useful.
Note: If you don’t have the quest active, Geralt will not be able to pick a trail from the cart. There will be nothing at the tree up the hill and you will not be able to access the underground hideout. You need to enter this hideout for one of the four diagrams!
Loot the contents of the chest marked in red to find a note and the first Ofieri Armor diagram. The note will give you the insights you need to continue the quest. You will have three more locations marked on your map. That’s where you will find the three remaining Ofieri armor diagrams.
The three bandit camps are located around the Upper Mill in northeastern Velen. Two of them are south of Upper Mill, one is to the west.
You will encounter bandits there and can apply the same strategies fighting them as you did in the underground hideout earlier.
After you collect all four, return to Dulla kh’Amanni at the Upper Mill to complete the quest. He will draft another set of diagrams for you. You can bring them to the Master Armorer in Crow’s Perch or an Armorer in Beauclair (Toussaint) to craft the Ofieri Armor Set.
Below you can see the crafting requirements for each Ofieri armor piece:
And here are the stats for each individual Ofieri armor piece:
The crafting ingredients are nothing exceptional or too expensive. You can craft or dismantle items in your bags to get the dust. Or you can purchase them directly from Yoana at Crow’s Perch and quite a few other merchants in the game, even at the starter area of White Orchard.
Finally, this is what the Ofieri armor set and steel sword look like when equipped:
How to complete the “I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool” Achievement
After you collect and craft all required pieces of Ofieri gear in The Witcher 3, you will unlock the achievement “I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool”. It is part of the Hearts of Stone expansion as is the Ofieri gear.
If you have been following this guide so far, you will have unlocked the achievement. It is important to remember not to sell any items you obtain. An easy mistake is to sell to a merchant for money the Ofieri Stock Saddle. By the time you earn it from the race, you will likely have a better one equipped already. Resist the urge to sell anything until you get the achievement.
You do not need to equip the gear pieces to Geralt or Roach. It will be enough to have them in your inventory for the achievement to be granted to you.
If you have not been using this guide and just arrived at this section from the Table of Contents, here is the list of items you need to collect to earn the “I Wore Ofieri Before It Was Cool” Achievement:
- Purchase the Ofieri Saddlebags (Roach gear)
- Purchase the Ofieri Blinders (Roach gear)
- Win the Ofieri Stock Saddle (Roach gear)
- Purchase Ofieri Decorated Saber or Craft Ofieri Saber
- Craft Ofieri Scale Armor
- Craft Ofieri Gauntlets
- Craft Ofieri Sharovary
- Craft Ofieri Boots
The secondary quest for the Ofieri armor diagrams used to be bugged until Patch 4.0 when CD Projekt Red reported to have fixed it successfully.
