The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 8 Breakdown and Easter Eggs

Adrian by Adrian|

This week’s episode of The Bad Batch brings back the less chaotic side-quest aspect of the show. The appearance of Fennec Shand sets the scene up for an interesting development!

Recap of the Story So far

Rex captured an Imperial Operative who was sent to take down Senator Signh, after inspecting his equipment they noticed that Omega was also a target. The Bad Batch arrived at Teth to interrogate the Operative but chaos was unleashed after they arrived.

A second Operative eliminated almost all the men standing guard and pursued the rest. Right before Rex and the others could escape, Commander Wolffe cut them down and almost arrested them. After hearing what Rex had to say, Rex convinces him to let them go.

We have reviews and breakdowns of each episode of The Bad Batch. Check them out to make sure you are not missing any hidden details or easter eggs.

Clone Force 99 teams up with Fennec Shand

Despite everything they’ve achieved on their own, some things still require the help of other people. Clone Force 99 has some experience with the underworld but only as mere mercenaries, those with a vast net of contacts in said “industry” have been around for many years and not all are trustworthy.

The fact that they even consider asking Fennec Shand shows their desperation. Fennec has improved her reputation since her first encounter with Omega and is now a top-tier bounty hunter, for better or worse.

This episode reminded me of the previous season where most episodes felt like the protagonists doing some sidequests that would slowly help them achieve their ultimate goal. There weren’t any moments of real tension, at least not compared to the previous episodes where many things were at stake.

I don’t mind this type of episode as long as it doesn’t repeat too much. This is the final season of the show, having nerve-wracking episodes might be stressful but it’s also when the show feels more “real” and considering that this could be the last animated series in quite some time, I want to be at the edge of my seat with every episode.

With that said, I can’t deny it’s entertaining to see such an odd team working together. Fennec Shand might not be Din Djarin, but she’s a cool character and someone who I’d like to learn more about.

Is Crosshair’s problem physical

Crosshair has always been extremely reserved when it comes to talking about himself, what he’s thinking, or how he feels. As an elite sniper, he was trained to be a loner and keep everything to himself.

This trait of Crosshair’s character has been an issue during the last episodes. Whatever the Empire did to him on Tantiss has severely affected him but his refusal to even touch the topic doesn’t help at all.

Talking about the experiment might not cure him, but sometimes talking about our problems with others could help in ways we don’t imagine. Even just hearing a different perspective can be very helpful.

I love how despite Crosshair’s reluctance or incapacity to talk about the topic, this doesn’t stop Omega from trying to help him. AZI accurately points out that the issue might not be a physical problem and Omega takes it from there.

We often forget that the mind and body are connected. While sickness, injuries, or torture can be mostly physical things, the psychological damage they can cause could be irreversible.

Being pessimistic is not my thing, but I believe that Crosshair needs to get better as soon as possible. His ability to hit or miss can be the difference between life and death. After the Imperial Operative took down so many of Rex’s men, every pair of hands must count if there’s any hope.

Pabu is not safe

Pabu is a paradise; it’s clean, beautiful, and free of the Galactic Empire. It is the perfect place to stay low for some time, but the Bad Batch has made it their permanent hideout and I consider this a terrible mistake.

Staying in any place for an extended period is an awful idea no matter how you look at it. The Empire has all of its intelligence looking for Omega, this includes a net of spies, deployed operatives, informants, and probably bounty hunters.

The Empire already hired Cad Bane and Fennec Shand to capture Omega when she was just a means to make Nala Se cooperate. Now that she’s a key for Project Necromancer who knows who or what they’re going to send after her?

By staying on Pabu, they’re endangering every person on the island. The Empire doesn’t care if they have to go over children and elders if that means they’re going to achieve what they want.

If all the civilians could fight then maybe I would understand but none of them are warriors. At this point, the question is not “What if the Empire finds them?” but “When will they find them?” It’s a lose-lose situation regardless of how you look at it.

Hunter has been too careless and I’m afraid of what this means for all the people hiding on the island. The “best-case” scenario is the Empire sending the people to prisons, the worst one is none of them leave the place alive. Even if it’s the first option, the last thing they need to worry about is rescuing another group of people from an Imperial installation.

Should we trust Fennec

The last scene of Fennec and her mysterious contact left me feeling a little uneasy. There are bounty hunters who will be true to their word and honor a deal but there are others with a more dubious loyalty.

When we meet Fennec on The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, she’s a person who’s fulfilling an oath made to the man who saved her. But this is way before that, she’s still making a reputation, and double-crossing some clones for personal gain wouldn’t hurt her.

We already know that Cad Bane and Asajj Ventress will return in upcoming episodes. Asajj Ventress worked as a mercenary for some time and Cad Bane is already a top-notch bounty hunter. Fennec knows Cad Bane personally, and Ventress was in the same line of work so it’s also possible that she’s the one on the holocall.

M-count is not something that many people are familiar with, especially since the destruction of the Jedi Order and any public record of their knowledge. I don’t think that the Empire would share such information with bounty hunters since it is irrelevant to their job.

On the other hand, as a former Jedi and then Sith apprentice, Ventress knows perfectly what M-count is but it’s too soon to know what she’d do with it. It will be very interesting to see where she’s standing now. Is she actively looking for revenge against Palpatine or just trying to lay low waiting for the chaos to be over?

Easter eggs and references

The Haxion Brood

When talking about her target, Fennec Shand mentions the Haxion Brood. This is a crime syndicate that is constantly hunting Cal Kestis and his crew in Star Wars Jedi Survivor after Cal escaped their arena in Jedi Fallen Order.

Ming-Na Wen

Fennec Shand sounds the same as her live-action counterpart, that’s because Ming-Na Wen returned to voice her character after her debut in animation during the first season of The Bad Batch.

Space Florida

Sylar, the mantis-like creature that Fennec, Hunter, and Wrecker capture lives in a place that is very resembling of the Everglades National Park. A huge area of Florida famous for its swamps, vegetation, and alligators.
