This guide to the main quest “Through Time and Space” in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt will help you get through the worlds safely and easily as Avallac’h drags you from one to another. In one of them there is a Place of Power and the guide will show you when, where and how to get it!
This guide is up-to-date for The Witcher 3 Next-Gen version (Update 4.04)
Preparations
The “Through Time and Space” quest is a late-game main quest. It is recommended for players level 26. As with anything in the game, this recommendation is optional.
In fact, after The Battle of Kaer Morhen (which is for level 22), you will likely be level 26 or even higher. You have probably noticed that after you reach Novigrad, the XP Points seemingly start to flow quicker and you gain levels faster. The number of optional and main quests also helps as the game becomes a bit more linear after the main story in Skellige.
This is a long quest. You can stop and resume if you like. Once you start it, you will not be able to meditate. Be sure to bring full stacks of HP Regen food, drinks and potions. The combat encounters during this quest are not many, but if you play on high difficulty, things like Swallow, Dimeritium Bombs, Elementa oil and Insectoid oil would be valuable. The Raffard’s Decoction might be of great help as well in one of the worlds you are about to visit.
How to start Through Time and Space
“Through Time and Space” is a separate quest that begins automatically after you talk to Avallac’h for the quest “Final Preparations”. During “Final Preparations” you have to speak to all main characters, including the elven mage Avallac’h.
Avallac’s will ask that you join him on a journey through several unknown worlds to get to Ge’els. Ge’els is a key general and advisor to Eredin. You two are going to convince him to help you during your fight against Eredin.
To achieve that, Avallac’h wants you two to meet Ge’els in person, in his elven palace. But to get to this place, you have to do several jumps through strange and unknown worlds.
To start “Through Time and Space”, head to Dandelion’s inn near the Gate of the Hierarch in Novigrad. Avallac’h is in the VIP apartment on the top floor. After you talk to him and agree to help him, you can either start the quest now or agree to meet him on the street a little to the north of the inn. He will be there, waiting, in case you want to prepare.
The place you meet Avallac’h is at the same old “hunted” house where you met one of the Godlings and the oneiromancer Corinne Tilly during the quest “Novigrad Dreaming” earlier in your adventure in Novigrad with Triss.
Note: After you start, you will not be able to rest and meditate during the duration of the quest.
Go to the basement and break the wall to reveal the portal, which Avallac’h will open. Go through it to start the quest.
The Ddiddiwedht Desert World
The first world you find yourself in is the Ddiddiwedht Desert. This is a short linear trip. Avallac’h will continue to explain how this journey will work.
At the end of the walk, the portal you have to go through is not yet activated. You have to wait a minute or two. Of course, while you wait, giant Sandcrabs have sensed your presence and will attack you.
The monsters are level 25 and will continue spawning endlessly. Use Insectoid Oil on your silver sword. Insectoids are also weak to Samum bombs and Fire attacks (bombs and Igni).
It takes one minute after the Sandcrabs spawn for the portal to appear. It activates in the middle of the stone structure.
The Poison Fields World
The second world you find yourself in is full of poisonous fields. You lose Avallac’h here and will have to manage alone. There is no fighting in the Poisoned Valley World.
This is the world where you can find one more Place of Power. Since you only ever visit this place once, during the “Through Time and Space” quest, you have one chance to get the +1 Ability Point from the magic stone.
You have to run through these fields, as fast as possible. Nothing will help you from chocking. Not Aard, not Igni, not even Golden Oriole.
How to get to the Place of Power
You can reach the Portal without going to the Place of Power as it’s not on the main path. You have to make a detour.
From the starting point, go down the steps. Follow the path that turns left around the stone. A brief cinematic will play, to make sure you spot both the Place of Power and the portal after it.
On the other side of this stone (image above), climb up, then jump down and run through the poison field.
As you approach the poison, Geralt will comment on how the “vapors don’t look terribly inviting”. Jump down and run towards the right side, in the direction of the Place of Power. Climb up on this small elevated space, where you can rest for a bit.
With the big red stone pillar from the image above now behind you, head south and jump down a couple of times.
Jump up one final time and you will find yourself next to the Place of Power. It gives you an Aard buff.
How to reach the Portal
After you have picked up the Ability Point and Aard buff from the Place of Power, head back the way you came. Head north, cross the small gap of poison field, take a quick break on the save spot, turn west and run through the larger poison valley.
After you cross the large poison valley, take a moment to rest and replenish your HP if needed, then head through the improvised pathway formed by the stone pillars.
Continue facing south on your minimap and climb the ledges, at the top turn left (east).
As you stand on the right side of the giant stone pillar, you should clearly see the Portal. You have to run through one more, rather short, poison field to reach the end.
The Underwater Section
The next world you visit is actually a quick swim underwater. There are a couple of jars to loot on your left, but in general, it’s a very short swim session.
The Frozen World – Tedd Deireadh, Time of the End
The next world you will visit will be filled with snow. Freezing cold snow. There is a unique mechanic here. If you stay in the open blizzard, your will start losing Health.
The goal in this world is to find Avallac’h, who is in a Lighthouse. To reach it you are supposed to go from one shelter to the next. I have split this segment of the guide in two sections. One is where you play by the game’s rules and loot and explore everything, the other one is a quicker and a bit cheeky path to avoid most of the encounters and possible damage received from the snowstorm and avoid fighting enemies.
Explore and play it the way it was intended (Option 1)
As you spawn in the cave, move towards the exit. Geralt will comment on the cold – a hint of the blizzard and HP mechanic. What the game doesn’t clearly state is that in this specific section, lighting a fire will actually restore your HP. You can use Swallow and Food while sheltered, but out in the open, you have fewer options.
While HP regen food, drinks and potions don’t work in the story, the instant effect of the White Raffard’s Decoction works. This also grants you immunity for a brief moment.
Quen is very helpful in this world as well. Cast it when in cover and it will give you a few extra seconds of protection from the blizzard in the open.
The loot in this world is nothing exceptional. I have never looted anything extremely valuable or rare on any of my playthroughs, but the completionist in me always screams “don’t skip, don’t you date to skip”!
Break the glass wall to exit the cave.
The first possible hiding places where you can restore HP are a large rock formation and two small house rouins.
After that, the goal is to reach the house on the left at the bottom of the valley. As you exit cover and slide down, a short cinematic will trigger and you will find yourself exiting a small house. In the image below you are actually standing on the roof of that house.
Geralt will spot the Lighthouse, which is your destination. That’s where you will find Avallac’h as well. Don’t forget to loot the items in this house before you continue down the slope. You can find Traveler’s Notes on one of the skeletons.
Slide down to get to the bottom house on the left.
Enter the house, loot stuff and jump down on the lower floor. Two level 27 Hounds of the Wild Hunt will ambush you at the portal downstairs. Use Elementa Oil on your silver sword. These monsters are also weak to Igni, Axii and Dimeritium Bomb, which will prevent them from using their special (and very annoying) ability.
Exit through the portal and immediately turn left to the next house’s entrance.
After you exit this house, don’t run to the right side. Instead, enter the next house on the left through a small window in the roof story.
Go to the lower story. Pick up Anna’s Notes, found right in front of the stove, which you can light up and use to restore HP.
The next two houses you can explore are on the left and right as you move down the slope.
The final step of this slope is to reach the broken stone wall at the bottom. Right before you exit the structure at the wall, you can pick up Ervyl’s diary from a skeleton on the floor.
On the other side, you will see a flat surface area with five braziers, which will provide safe area for you to fight off the ambushing Hounds of the Wild Hunt (level 27). You can avoid these by simply going to the right (Path 2 on the image below), where the Lighthouse’s entrance is, but… skipping is not for true witchers :)))
Defeat the monsters, loot whatever they drop and head into the Lighthouse. Inside you will meet Avallac’h. As Geralt commented earlier, it was the elven mage who lit up the Lighthouse as a beacon for Geralt to follow.
Complete it the Easy way (Option 2)
I am writing this guide for the next-gen and the following mechanics are still available here, which means that CD PROJEKT RED probably considers them a “smart” way to avoid having to deal with the snowstorm in this frozen world.
If you use the Ekhidna Decoction, you can ignore the blizzard. The Ekhidna Decoction restores HP when you use Stamina. Every jump in the game uses a bit of Stamina. Jumping every few seconds would be enough to mitigate the damage you are constantly taking from the blizzard. This is no longer valid. In Patch 4.01 CD Projekt Red made it so jumping no longer consumes Stamina.
You can opt to skip the house with the two Hounds of the Wild Hunt as well as go around the area with the five braziers and directly enter the Lighthouse, thus avoiding the second possible fight with the Hounds of the Wild Hunt.
Doing this, will still complete the quest, but you will miss the extra notes and loot. They are not essential to the story, but give you extra background and help with the immersion. Plus, the first time I did this back in 2015, I did it the normal way as I had not yet experimented with the effects of the potions and decoctions. It’s a lot more fun. And you play this game to have fun, not to see the end credits as soon as possible. Right?
Whichever way you do it, the target is the Lighthouse and after you reach it, Avallac’h will be there to take you to the final destination – Ge’els’s world Aen Elle.
Talk to Avallac’h in the Lighthouse
The conversation in the Lighthouse is very interesting. I strongly suggest you go through all optional dialogue lines. Especially the second one.
Meeting Ge’els
Finally, you arrive at Tir ná Lia, the capital of Aen Elle. This is where you meet Ge’els, at his palace, his headquarters.
There’s no valuable loot, except for a note with an update to the current progress of the Wild Hunt, which you can pick up from a bench. Outside of that, simply follow the elven mage until you meet Ge’els.
You have a couple of decisions to make here in the final conversation before you get back to Novigrad.
Back to Novigrad
Ge’els has agreed to come and witness the true events of the killing of his king. For that, you go back to Novigrad where Ciri will meet you. Next to her is Corinne Tilly, the oneiromancer who you met earlier during the quest “Novigrad Dreaming”.
After Ge’els witnesses the events of Eredin killing his king and usurping the throne, he agrees to help and guarantees that “Eredin will not receive help from “should he call for reinforcements, no Aen Elle will answer”.
Ge’els tells you to go to Skellige and find the Sunstone. With it, you will summon the Naglfar (the ship that you have already seen in a few cinematic scenes earlier in the game).
With that, the quest ends and Avallac’h will teleport Ge’els back to his world.
Through Time and Space Step-by-Step Walkthrough
This step-by-step walkthrough summarizes what the full guide to the main quest Through Time and Space in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt explains. Notes
In the Poison Fields world you can skip the Place of Power, but if you do not get to it while you are there, you will never be able to return to this world later. This is one free Ability Point you do not want to miss out on.
In the Frozen World of Tedd Deireadh, you can skip most of the houses and run to the Lighthouse much faster if you use Ekhinda decoction, which still works in the next-gen update. If you opt to fully explore this world, make use of Quen and any fire sources in the shelters. Things like braziers and ovens will actually regenerate HP while you stand near them.
