SWTOR Update 7.3 “Old Wounds” releases on June 13th, 2023. It features more solo story, a new landing zone on Voss, a new flashpoint, DPS balance changes, fixes to the credit economy, PvP changes, and soon PvP Season 3 and Nar Shaddaa Nightlife!
“Old Wounds” Solo Story
The next solo chapter (or chapter-ish thing) shifts the focus back on the mystery with Darths Malgus and Nul while the Mandalorian Civil War takes a back seat.
Returning characters include Darth Malgus, Sana-Rae, Arcann (if applicable), Tau Idair, and Darth Rivix as well as cameos from the Mandalorian crew like Shae Vizla, Torian Cadera (if applicable), as well as our favorite HD-textured Twi’leks, Sa’har and Ri’kan Kateen.
New Landing Zone on Voss: Interpreter’s Retreat
The Old Wounds story will take place at a new landing zone on Voss called the Interpreter’s Retreat. It will be accessible from the Galaxy Map just like how daily areas are often separate from the larger planets.
Make no mistake, the Interpreter’s Retreat is not a daily area, though there are some side-quests and achievements to complete as well as some new decos and armor sets. It’s structurally reminiscent of Zakuul where there’s an open area that connects a bunch of story phases.
In addition, all of Voss has been upgraded with higher-resolution textures and enhanced foliage just like we saw on Ruhnuk. It’s unclear whether BioWare plans to give this sort of treatment to all planets.
One of the main attractions at the Interpreter’s Retreat is the new vendor offering 16 new Voss-themed armor sets, one for each combat style. The vendor is available for everyone, regardless of level and story progress.
New Flashpoint: Shrine of Silence
There is a new Flashpoint coming with 7.3 that will also take place on Voss. You’ll be investigating a Voss Shrine that’s fallen into disrepair as the locals believe it has been cursed.
The devs are shifting back to the old style of FPs from vanilla where the FP isn’t pulling double-duty as part of the main story (AKA critical path) while also being a piece of group content. As a result, you will not need to have done the new story on Voss in order to have access to this FP, so it will be more supplemental and world-building-y rather than contributing to the main story.
They opted to return to the old style because the objectives of telling a story are often diametrically opposed to the structure people want in a Flashpoint. Most notably, people just want to spacebar through the cutscenes when doing the FP with a group, but cutscenes are the whole point of story content.
On the flip side, story content doesn’t need to have such a rigid 3-4 boss structure with trash in between like Flashpoints do because it’s not fitting into a set type of content.
The dedicated guide I have for the Flashpoint includes instructions on how to solve the Shrine of Light Puzzle, how to unlock the Bonus Boss and the special achievements in the Flashpoint.
Balance Changes Coming to DPS Specs
There are a host of balance changes coming to most of the DPS specs including:
- Powertech and Vanguard
- Mercenary and Commando
- Sniper and Gunslinger
- Operative and Scoundrel
- Assassin and Shadow
- Sorcerer and Sage
- Annihilation Marauder and Watchman Sentinel
The changes mostly focus on narrowing the performance gap between disciplines in the same Combat Style, as in there won’t be as much of a change in your damage output when you switch from one discipline to the other on a given Combat Style.
Notable changes include a powerful new redesign to the Stealth Scan abilities for Powertechs / Vanguards and Mercenaries and Commandos, a survivability buff for Snipers / Gunslingers, small damage boosts for Lightning / Telekinetics and Arsenal / Gunnery, and a redesign for the Random Charge implant for Mercenaries / Commandos that results in a rotational change for IO/AS.
I will be updating all of my class guides soon to reflect these balance changes and releasing the guide for Advanced Prototype Powertech / Tactics Vanguard to celebrate its return to PvE viability!
Continued Efforts to Fix the Credit Economy
With 7.3, we’ll be getting more significant adjustments that aim to reduce and prevent further inflation of the credit economy. This time, the focus is on closing loopholes where credit sinks are being avoided.
There will now be an 8% tax associated with all trades, gifts, mail, and CoD that is equivalent to the tax associated with selling the item on the GTN.
A GTN overhaul is being planned, but the objective is to use a progressive tax on the current median GTN sale price of the item being sold, as in the median price that a given item actually sold for.
You will be taxed on gifts, and until the GTN changes happen, it’s unclear how this will work if you’re gifting items. It’s likely that everything currently will be using static values derived from past market data, but that’s unconfirmed.
The devs don’t want there to be a tax on trades between guild members, and there won’t be one for now, though in order to minimize tax evasion, players won’t be able to use the guild bank until they have been in a guild for 30 days.
In addition, the Tax Evasion guild perk has been removed from the Guild Perk rotation and there have been some changes to the costs of some items on vendors.
While unrelated to credits specifically, I also want to mention another change coming to the economy: Daily Resource Matrices are getting removed and converted to Conquest Commendations.
Gearing is getting simplified further where buying or upgrading a piece of gear will only cost the currency you get from doing that type of content + credits + the piece of gear you’re upgrading.
PvP Changes and Season 3
PvP Season 2 is coming to an end this week, then we’ll have a month off, and then Season 3 will be starting on July 18th and run until October 10th (12 weeks).
BioWare hasn’t released full details on the rewards coming with Season 3, but they did show off the Sandstorm Soldier Armor set that seems to be a heavier armor take on the bone samurai look.
The changes to PvP are focused on increasing the rate at which players earn medals by increasing the amount of Attacker and Defender Points earned to make it easier to fulfill the medals requirement for PvP season objectives. These changes affect the following maps:
- Novare Coast
- Yavin Ruins
- Voidstar
- Huttball (all versions)
BioWare is trying to make it so you can still get your PvP season objectives done even if you prefer to fight rather than play objectives, so long as you’re fighting where the objectives are.
If you want to learn more, check out this segment on SWTOR 7.3 PvP Changes from our coverage of BioWare’s live stream from May 2023.
Nar Shaddaa Nightlife Event
The Nightlife Event will be returning on July 11th and last until August 22nd. The event will be largely unchanged from its 2022 edition with the exception of two new rewards added.
The High Roller Skiff Mount and High Roller Armor Set Box will be available as lucky drops from the Emperor’s Grace Machine. The High Roller Armor individual pieces will be available for purchase from a vendor.
Vulkk has already update the Nightlive Event Guide for 2023 with the new rewards and dates. We will have to double-check the vendors’ contents once the event goes live to make sure the SWTOR dev team has not shuffled something there.
