First look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2: Intense and brutal, just like the first season

CD Projekt Red and TRIGGER have released a teaser trailer that introduces the protagonists of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, as well as some hints about the plot of the upcoming Netflix series.

This teaser trailer is intense and full of scenes that might not make much sense immediately, but after paying attention, it’s clear that the central topic of this season is one of the coolest concepts in Cyberpunk 2077: braindance.

What is a braindance

Braindance is a technology that enables the recording and playback of an individual’s experiences, including their physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts. Initially developed as a psychological treatment method for penal reform, braindance quickly became one of the most popular forms of immersive media entertainment.

Braindances or “BDs” are also recorded for the purposes of surveillance, intelligence-gathering, archiving, pornography production, scientific research, and personal use.

There’s also the illegal side of this entertainment, which is referred to as Extreme Braindances or “XBDs”. In this “genre”, people are forced to film content that is themed around rape, death, and everything gruesome that you can think of.

Now that we have established what a braindance is, we have to look at some of the new characters and the information available about them.

Meet the crew

It appears that at least these four characters will be working together. It’s hard to learn anything about them just from the trailer, but thankfully, CDPR has released a small bit of info about each one of them. Here’s what we know so far.

Weak

Weak used to be known as “King”, a veteran edgerunner who was among the top of his craft. He lives in the shadow of his former glory.

D

D is a Snake Nation netrunner with sharp technical skills and a hunger for revenge. He’s looking for the killer who killed his clan.

Roman

Roman Carax is a very young cinephile looking for stories on an abandoned city that was used for Braindance filming. He is obsessed with “documenting truth”, but we all know that the truth in Night City is often brutal and very raw.

Talia

Talia is a woman who was raised in a corporate environment and later embraced Maeltrom’s chrome-obsessed culture. Due to her involvement with this gang, she’s more than used to extreme violence.

With this information and the scenes from the trailer, where we see them tearing multiple people to pieces, I can think of two things:

Either they are trying to get into the XBD business, or Roman is simply tagging along with a gang while they’re doing their job.

These four characters might be the main protagonists, but the announcement teaser revealed at least 9 more characters. It’s still too early to know if they’re going to be allies or enemies, but one thing is for sure: most of them are going to die.

As a fan of anime and someone who has spent hundreds of hours playing Cyberpunk 2077, I have no doubt that Edgerunners is going to be violent, intense, and leave us on the verge of tears. Let’s not forget that this takes place in Night City, and there are no happy endings in Night City.

Release Date

There is no official date yet. The series will premiere on Netflix in the Fall of 2026. The new stand-alone story will span 10 episodes, same as the first season.
