This guide will help you get all five SWTOR Datacrons on Ilum. From the best starting point to the exact location where you can collect them. And, of course, the Data Coded Entry lore behind each Datacron!
Datacrons are hidden collectible items in SWTOR that provide a permanent stat boost to all of your characters within your Legacy on a server.
There are dozens of Datacrons spread across both the Republic and Empire factions in SWTOR. Each Datacron you collect permanently boosts the stats of every character you have, including new characters. Every Datacron also unlocks a Codex Entry which unlocks Lore for you to read.
The Ilum Datacrons are accessible to both Republic and Empire factions. The planet is located in the Unknown Regions. This frozen planet has no indigenous population but is home to one of the Jedi Order’s most distant outposts.
This guide goes over all the Datacrons that you can find on the planet Ilum. The Locations and Codex Entries are the same for both Factions. Each walkthrough segment of the guide always begins with the recommended starting point on the map and ends with the location of the Datacron itself and the Data Codex Entry.

Ilum Blue Mastery Datacron Location
This Datacron will permanently increase your Mastery with +4. It unlocks the Galactic History 83 Codex Entry.
The Blue Datacron is located in the southeastern corner of the Republic Base Camp area. The starting point is at the southeasternmost end of the Heroic Area, facing south towards the ice wall.
From there, hug the ice wall and run as fast as you can. You will hit the exhaustion zone and run through it as you go around the ice wall.
On the other side of the ice, right where the shadow on the ground ends, you will exit the exhaustion zone. The Datacron is just a few steps ahead.
Successfully collecting the Datacron will give you +4 Mastery to all characters and the Codex Entry:
Galactic History 83 – The Republic Rebuilds
The secret manipulations of the Sith Triumvirate following the Jedi Civil War almost destroyed the Republic. With infrastructure crumbling and the Jedi Order nearly extinct–its Masters almost entirely slain, and its younger members slowly emerging from hiding–the future seemed bleak. But the Jedi Exile and the other heroes of the Jedi Civil War would not see the Republic fall.
With renewed treaties and alliances, trade gradually began to flow and the Republic military regained its strength. Meanwhile, the Exile trained new Jedi recruits, forming a council of her companions who achieved mastery and welcoming others who came out of hiding. After years of slow but steady growth, the reborn Jedi Order made a triumphant return to its long-abandoned temple on Coruscant.
But the Jedi Exile could not forget Darth Traya’s final warning, suggesting that evil remained in the Unknown Regions. With the Jedi Order flourishing, the Exile left the known galaxy to follow her former commander Revan into darkness.
Ilum Endurance Datacron Location
This Datacron will permanently increase your Endurance with +4. It unlocks the Galactic History 84 Codex Entry.
The Endurance Datacron is located in the Contested Crossroads in the Eastern Ice Shelf of Ilum. Starting point is at the top of the two metal elevators, facing south.
Take one of the elevators down. It’s too high, so don’t jump. After you land at the bottom, turn to your right and head west.
The Datacron is hidden right around the first corner on the right side, in a small area surrounded by tall ice walls with a narrow entrance point from the south.
Successfully collecting the Datacron will give you +4 Endurance to all characters and the Codex Entry:
Galactic History 84 – The G0-T0 Coup
During the Republic’s weakened period after the Jedi Civil War, Aratech Systems had produced G0-T0 droids with hugely sophisticated programming designed to administer entire worlds. The G0-T0 droids were also given an additional order: find ways to restore the Republic while remaining within all legal boundaries. The conflict between these two factors caused at least one G0-T0 droid to break its programming and go rogue, choosing to strengthen the Republic by any means necessary.
Other G0-T0 droids took more drastic measures. Sixteen of the droids in the Gordian Reach established dictatorships on the worlds they administered, eventually declaring the region an independent territory named “400100500260026.” Supreme Chancellor Cressa was forced to deploy the Republic military to reclaim the Gordian Reach. The campaign was a widely publicized success, though not all of the rogue droids were accounted for.
Ilum Red Matrix Shard Datacron Location
Matrix Shards are mission items that you can use to create a Relic for a level 50 character. The Shards are earned Per-Character. This means that even though the Datacron is considered collected for your entire Legacy if you want to get the Matrix Shard on a different character you will have to find the Datacron again on that character. This Datacron unlocks Galactic History 85 Codex Entry.
The Red Matrix Shard is located on the roof of the Republic Base in the Republic Base Camp area on the Eastern Shelf. Starting point is facing south at the edge of the ice wall, right where a Republic Defence droid NPC is patrolling.
From there go southwest to the tents. It’s a Republic territory, so the NPCs around will be hostile to Imperial players, but they are far apart and easy to avoid.
Find the four tents connected by a fire-breathing furnace that also looks like a fancy antenna. Only one of the tents has an open entrance – the left one. Inside is the Red Matrix Shard.
Successfully collecting the Matrix Datacron will give you 1 Red Matrix Shard in the Mission Items Tab of your Inventory, as well as the Codex Entry:
Galactic History 85 – The Purge of the Dark Council
After the Great Hyperspace War, the Sith Emperor had successfully led his people to the sanctuary of Dromund Kaas. Having re-established the Empire there, he slowly withdrew from public life, leaving the Empire’s administration to his Dark Council.
At first the Dark Council was subservient to the Emperor. But as centuries passed and the Emperor remained withdrawn, the Dark Council became more independent, believing he was weakening. When the council discovered the Emperor was planning to invade the Republic, there was angry dissent. Naga Sadow’s failed invasion of the Republic a millennium before had almost destroyed the Empire; some believed it would be madness to repeat his mistake.
Several of the Dark Council’s members decided to depose the Emperor before he led them to destruction. But the Emperor learned of their intentions and the entire Dark Council, loyalists and dissenters alike, was purged. The price of disobedience made clear, a new council was chosen and the Emperor’s plans proceeded.
Ilum Yellow Matrix Shard Datacron Location
Matrix Shards are mission items that you can use to create a Relic for a level 50 character. The Shards are earned Per-Character. This means that even though the Datacron is considered collected for your entire Legacy if you want to get the Matrix Shard on a different character you will have to find the Datacron again on that character. This Datacron unlocks Galactic History 86 Codex Entry.
This one is incredibly easy to pick up. It’s inside a small one-story building located in the Imperial Base Camp on the Eastern Ice Shelf.
The entrance is on the north side. The NPCs in the area will be hostile to Republic players, though the only one you will have to deal with is a level 50 Imperial Guardsman.
Successfully collecting the Datacron will give you 1 Yellow Matrix Shard in the Mission Items Tab of your Inventory, as well as the Codex Entry:
Galactic History 86 – The Empire’s Revenge
The Republic had enjoyed three hundred years of peace, knowing nothing of the Sith Empire’s continued existence on Dromund Kaas. When strange battle cruisers were reported in the Tingel Arm, the Republic sent a diplomatic vessel that was annihilated after sending a frantic transmission. As the Republic and Jedi began to investigate these mysterious newcomers, a massive Imperial battle fleet descended on Korriban, triumphantly reclaiming the Sith holy world for the Empire.
Imperial fleets converged on targets in the Outer Rim, devastating key military outposts. Planetary governments corrupted by secret Imperial agents suddenly revealed their allegiance to the Sith.
No one knew how powerful this reborn Sith Empire was, how large it had grown during the past millennium or where its capital was located.
The Republic was thrown into chaos. Disagreements in the Senate and the defection of key systems delayed its military response, while the Imperial forces coolly carried out the Emperor’s plans. Despite several important victories–most notably at Bothawui–the Republic was forced onto a defensive footing. The first stage of the Emperor’s plan was a success.
Ilum Purple Mastery Datacron Location
This Datacron will permanently increase your Mastery with +4. It unlocks the Galactic History 87 Codex Entry.
The Purple Mastery Datacron is hidden far to the north at the very end of the map. The starting point is The Barren Frost area on the Eastern Ice Shelf.
The zone leading up to the edge is a Heroic area for Imperial players. Stay close to the eastern ice wall and you will be able to avoid entering combat.
Make it down to the bottom of this giant crevasse and walk west. All the way on the other end, there is an entrance to a cave full of crystals.
Walk through the cave until you encounter The Crystal Eater monster, which you can easily avoid by going around it.
The Datacron is located at the very end of the cave, behind a small ice rock formation with some crystals on top of it.
Successfully collecting the Datacron will give you +4 Mastery to all characters and the Codex Entry:
Galactic History 87 – A Wayward Apprentice
The Sith Empire was founded on absolute obedience. As the war between the Republic and the Empire raged, however, the Emperor sent out an order: His apprentice, Exal Kressh, had abandoned her duties and disappeared, and for this treachery she was to be destroyed.
The Dark Council dispatched the young Sith Teneb Kel to hunt Exal Kressh. He followed her to Lenico, where a vision showed him the Emperor’s true plans; plans Exal had rebelled against.
As a Republic fleet used information supplied by Exal to attack Korriban, Teneb Kel and Exal Kressh clashed in Korriban’s tombs. With the help of his slave Qawohl, Teneb cut Exal down and the Republic attack was repelled.
Teneb Kel reported to the Dark Council and struck a bargain: make him a Darth, and he would share what he knew of the Emperor’s intentions. Teneb chose the name of the guide from his vision on Lenico, Darth Thanaton.
