What are Star Fortresses
Star Fortresses are Zakuul Empire facilities that are placed into the orbit of a conquered planet. These act as surveillance and deterrence as they contain a Skytrooper factory and the ability to unleash the power of the artificial sun that powers them, destroying the planet if necessary.
In SWTOR, these act as flashpoints and you can infiltrate the fortresses to disrupt or destroy them. You can enter a Star Fortress orbiting Alderaan, Belsavis, Hoth, Nar Shaddaa, Tatooine, or Voss.
The interior of the Star Fortresses are randomly generated using preset maps (modules). You can visit the same Star Fortress twice and experience entirely new scenarios. Regardless of the maps used, they’re simple to traverse.
You’ll start out in a Decommissioned Observation Tower. Use the elevator to access the Star Fortress proper and you’ll go through the Upper Deck, Skytrooper Production Floor, Lower Decks, then the final boss room.
How to unlock Star Fortresses
To unlock Star Fortresses, you must be level 65 or higher and complete Chapter IX of Knights of the Fallen Empire era. You can pick up the mission Battle for the Stars at the Alliance Headquarters on Odessen.
Talk to the Sullustan named Miot Dengd. He’ll grant you the mission Battle for the Stars where you can take on your first Star Fortress.
After completing your first Star Fortress mission, you can repeat these by talking to Sergeant Ahkar at the Alliance Landing on Odessen.
Near him is a terminal that will grant you a Weekly mission, The Star Fortress, that you can complete for an Alliance Crate.
When talking to Sergeant Ahkar, you can select a Story Mode or Veteran mode Star Fortress. Story Mode is designed to be done with a single player and their companion. If you’re doing Veteran Mode, you might want to bring a friend with you as the instance becomes more dangerous.
Failure in Star Fortresses
Unlike other flashpoints, you don’t respawn at the starting room or nearest checkpoint should you fall in combat. Instead, you’ll wake up in a prison cell and you’ll be unable to use any of your abilities.
You’ll gain two temporary abilities while in this cell. One will distract a patrolling guard, the other will knock them out. Use them to escape then use the Detention Cell Access Remote to break out of your cell.
Once free, go to the west and use the Suppression Collar Removal Forceps to remove your suppression collar. You’ll now be able to use your regular abilities. Now you need to escape to continue infiltrating the fortress.
If you’re a Force user, stand in the middle of the room and right click the door to break it open. If you’re a tech user, grab the gas near the forceps, plant it at the door, then right click the tank to blow a hole.
Fight your way through the security, disable the laser fence, and escape through the elevator. You’ll continue in the floor you were at last. If you’re defeated again, the detention cell will remain broken, allowing for an easy escape.
Veteran Mode Differences
We recommend that you bring at least one friend to help you with Veteran mode Star Fortresses to make the journey easier. You’ll find three major differences between Story and Veteran mode, they are:
Different Boss Fights
The biggest difference between Story and Veteran modes is that the final boss will change in Star Fortress. Story mode will have you fight the EPHEMERIS Unit while Veteran mode has you fight an Exarch.
Story Mode will have medical stations around the room that you can use to heal the group. In Veteran Mode, there are no medical stations to use.
Access to Alliance Buffs
The first difference you’ll notice in Veteran mode is in the Decommissioned Observation Tower that you start out in. Near the elevator, you’ll find a Star Fortress Central Network Access Terminal.
If you have Influence Level 10 with any of the Alliance Specialists, you’ll gain a buff when you activate the terminal. The buffs you can receive from the terminal are as follows:
Buff | From | Effect | |
---|---|---|---|
Force Convocation | Sana Rae | Increased Presence | |
Tactical Insight | Admiral Aygo | Increased damage dealt | |
Biosynthetic Acclimatization | Dr. Oggurobb | Increased max health | |
Epsilon Interference | Hylo Visz | Reduced damage taken from Skytroopers |
Equipment Caches
You can find up to four equipment caches hidden in the Star Fortress. Two will be in the Upper Decks and two in the Lower Decks. You’ll find these in the side rooms that typically house Mini-Bosses.
You can use these items multiple times or until you complete the Star Fortress. You can find the following items:
Prototype Medical Probe
Summons a medical probe to heal the group a moderate amount followed by a periodic heal for 6 seconds.
Portable Sentry Turret
Plants a turret that lasts for 60 seconds and generates a high amount of threat with its attacks.
XR-9 Scrambler Grenade
Throw a grenade that stuns Weak, Standard, and Strong enemies for 6 seconds in a 6 meter area.
Zakuulan Force Focus
Grants “Force Trampel” which removes movement-impairing effects, increases your movement speed for 7 seconds, and deal AoE damage within 6 meters of you for the duration.
Upper Deck Hallways
Here are some of the map layouts you can run into on a Sky Fortress’s upper deck. Yellow dots on the maps indicate a Paladin spawn point. Click or tap on the images to enlarge them.
Author’s Note: I would have preferred to point out every location that Paladins can spawn, but the RNG nature of Star Fortresses made that task rather difficult.
Be sure to check all the medium and large rooms as these are where Paladins typically spawn. The maps are small so they’re easy to traverse.
Boss: Skytrooper Praetorian
When you exit upper decks, you’ll reach the Skytrooper Production Floor. Three Skytroopers will attack while the boss is being assembled. When complete, the Skytrooper Praetorian Boss will start attacking.
The Praetorian has two buffs, Steadfast making it immune to physics and knockdowns, the other is Carbonic Nanotube Armor that reduces incoming damage.
Its attacks are fairly simple overall, just avoid any red AoEs. There are two things you should watch out for. If it lands on the ground like the image below, don’t attack it until it explodes. It will be immune to damage while kneeling.
The Praetorian will occasionally assemble reinforcements and take this pose. Interrupt it to prevent Skytroopers from flying in.
Veteran Mode Differences
The Praetorian’s Steadfast passive will instead be replaced with Boss Immunity making it immune to incapacitates and movement impairing effects. Other than the, the fight is just the same but harder.
Lower Deck Hallways
Here are some of the map layouts you can run into on a Sky Fortress’s lower deck. Yellow dots on the maps indicate a Paladin spawn point. Click or tap on the images to enlarge them.
Boss: EPHEMERIS Unit
The boss for Story Mode is the EPHEMERIS Unit. You’ll see a hologram of it but it will summon Knights and Skytroopers from the back doors. Defeat the adds and keep an eye on the two shielded control panels to the sides of the room.
After defeating enough adds, one of the shields will come down and a Skytrooper Core Guardian will spawn. Defeat the Guardian as it’ll pull you away from the console if you attempt to use it.
When defeated, use the console to overload it and repeat the process until the other console is destroyed.
With both cores down, the EPHEMERIS unit will come out and attack you. They’re not difficult and may fling you around like a rag doll, but it’s a simple tank and spank fight. Once defeated, you need to get out with the elevator to end the flashpoint.
Boss: Exarchs
You’ll reach the EPHEMERIS Unit room and some Knights and Skytroopers will attack you. Defeat them then take the elevator down to start chasing down the Exarch.
The first room you’ll run into will have a Skytrooper Sunguard Captain and Skytrooper Sunguards. Defeating them will have them drop a Photovoltaic Radiation Dampener.
This item will appear in your temporary ability bar and it can be used to shield yourself from the Exarch’s photovoltaic attacks or protect you from the Sun Generator’s pull in AoEs that can appear as you traverse the Sun Generator room.
In the second room, you’ll find that the Exarch is channeling energy and is immune to damage. They are also protected by Skytrooper Sunguard Captains. Defeat the Skytrooper Captains before using the console, otherwise they’ll pull you away from it.
Once the captains are defeated, use the console to overload the Exarch and they’ll flee to the next room. Protect yourself from the Sun Generator AoEs with the dampeners and use the Magnetic Anchor Tower to get across the gap.
In the next room, the Exarch will be floating and is once again immune to damage. This time they’ll have 8 stacks of Photovoltaic Energy. They’ll lob balls of energy at you, so avoid the red circles on the floor.
Defeat the two Sunguard Captains and any Skytroopers that come in. The Exarch will spend two stacks of their Photovoltaic Energy to activate a Photoconduction Droid. Defeat this droid to pick up a Dendrite Photocell Capacitor.
Like the Dampener, the Capacitor will become a temporary ability. Use this on the Exarch to drain 8 stacks of Photovoltaic Energy. When they run out, they’ll begin absorbing more. Use the console before they can recharge to have them run off to the next room.
Reach the fourth room and repeat this process. When you exit the room, look up and to the left for the magnetic anchor. Use it to reach the arena where the Exarch is.
All the Exarchs share the same move set for the most part. You’ll learn their shared moves followed by their unique moves. Like many bosses, they are immune to crowd control and immobilizing effects.
They also have the Shield of Tyth passive that will store kinetic energy from when they are attacked. This allows them to add a DoT to their shield attacks. Don’t worry about this too much.
Watch out for falling debris as you fight. These will appear as small red circles, simply step away from them before you get hit.
One thing you may notice is that if you kite them to the edge of the Reactor Platform, their attacks can break the glass walls. This creates an AoE that’ll burn and pull you towards the opening. Don’t go near here as you can get pulled out by the gravity or pushed out by the Exarch.
From here, it’s a matter of avoiding the red AoEs, especially the large one where they jump into the air then come crashing down.
If you have aggro on the boss, be mindful of the Impaling Strikes ability. This is a channeled melee attack that ends with the Exarch lifting you, then shield bashing you and knocking you back. This can knock you out of the arena if you’re not careful.
As for their unique abilities, they’ll do this by holding both arms in the air during a channeled ability. What this ability does depends on the Exarch you’re fighting. These can be interrupted to prevent their effects.
Zar Draya – Exarch of Alderaan
Zar Draya is the Exarch of Alderaan and defeating her will grant the character title “Liberator of Alderaan”.
Zar Draya’s unique ability is Scyva’s Presence. This will summon several Mental Apparitions that lower your damage and healing dealt. Defeat these apparitions with one hit then focus on the boss.
Forta Gair – Exarch of Belsavis
Forta Gair is the Exarch of Belsavis and defeating her will grant the character title “Liberator of Belsavis”.
Her unique ability is Aivela’s Flame. When used, the group will have their armor reduced for 9 seconds. This is seen as blue flames on effected targets.
Jom Vanten – Exarch of Hoth
Jom Vanten is the Exarch of Hoth and defeating him will grant the character title “Liberator of Hoth”. Jom’s ability is Nahut’s Burden which applies a slow to everyone in the group.
Lesin Tyn – Exarch of Nar Shaddaa
Lesin Tyn is the Exarch of Nar Shaddaa and defeating him will grant the character title “Liberator of Nar Shaddaa”. His ability is Esne’s Avarice which just heals him a small bit.
Tarso Gren – Exarch of Tatooine
Tarso Gren is the Exarch of Tatooine and defeating him will grant the character title “Liberator of Tatooine”.
His ability is Tyth’s Fury which increases his damage for 15 seconds. Unlike other Exarchs, he’ll channel his unique ability with one hand with red energy within it.
Andur Melor – Exarch of Voss
Andur Melor is the Exarch of Voss and defeating him will grant the character title “Liberator of Voss”. His unique ability is Izax’s Hunger and is a small self heal like Lesin Tyn’s ability.
Star Fortress Companions
As you make progress with the Knights of the Fallen Empire era, Theron Shan will notify you of various resistance contacts. Each of these will ask you to destroy a bunker providing a shield for the orbiting Star Fortress.
Destroying the planet’s shield bunker will allow you to take on the Star Fortress in Veteran Mode so you can destroy it. Helping the resistance members will allow you to recruit them as companions!

Decorations
Star Fortresses are a great way to get a wide variety of decorations. The bulk of them are tech related such as the various computers for the ground and walls, but you can also find some nice lighting and furniture from them.
The table below shows all available decorations. Check out our dedicated guide where we show them all with large previews and a lot of additional details.
