Is The Mandalorian and Grogu a success or a failure | Wars Weekly News

New Vintage Collection 2-pack from Hasbro, Thrawn by Timothy Zahn gets a fancy deluxe edition, and we discuss the performance of The Mandalorian and Grogu so far.

Is The Mandalorian and Grogu a success or a failure?

The Mandalorian and Grogu has been the topic of many conversations on the internet since its release day. Some loved it, others hated it, but the truth is that in order to form an opinion, you needed to buy a ticket and go see it on the big screen.

While public opinion might be important to Disney, we can’t deny that money is what makes Mickey Mouse and the shareholders the happiest. As long as they make a profit, they’ll continue to make movies or series regardless of the opinion of the most vocal part of the fandom.

So, parting from this idea, can we consider The Mandalorian and Grogu a success? Well, the movie had a 165 million dollar budget; this does not include the budget for marketing, which was probably absurd.

According to Variety, the movie made $10 million on its third week of release, marking a 60% drop from previous weeks. This puts it at $293 million globally.

Dedicated movie press estimates that in order to break even, The Mandalorian and Grogu must earn between 500-600 million. With movies like Backrooms, Obsession, Scary Movie, and Masters of the Universe being available, it’s very likely that the movie turns into a financial failure.

An odd sentiment considering how many people have enjoyed it, at least according to sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

I wrote a spoiler-free review and a deeper dive containing spoilers and analyzing the film’s plot, characters, events and environments.

There are probably many reasons that contributed to this, but what’s more important is what this means for the future. Is this going to set back any projects that were already being worked on, or will the apparent positive opinion of the people mitigate the greed of the shareholders?

Considering how many awful Marvel movies and series were released for almost a decade, I’d like to think that Filoni has some time (and money) available before the guys in suits start pointing fingers at him. Especially because this was Favreau’s big project and not his.

The success of the series and movies releasing between now and early 2028 are probably going to define the future of the franchise, for better or worse.
