Star Wars is releasing two movies on IMAX in 2027. Other Star Wars news this week include new comic books for Poe Dameron, Boba Fett, and the High Republic.
Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: Starfighter are coming to IMAX in 2027
2027 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope. One of many ways in which this milestone is going to be celebrated will be the re-release of a restored version of the original movie on February 19, 2027.
To make things even better, the film will be shown in IMAX 70mm in select theaters for a limited time.
Additionally, Star Wars: Starfighter was also shot with IMAX-certified film cameras and converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for release in a select number of IMAX film locations.
IMAX 70mm (aka IMAX 15/70) is a high-end film projection format. It uses a large 70mm film strip that runs horizontally through the projector.
Each frame is 70mm tall and spans 15 perforations. This makes the frames about 10 times larger than standard 35mm film and 3 times larger than regular 70mm film.
The image format is ~1,43:1 and boasts a resolution equivalent up to 18k. Few theaters in the world are currently equipped for this standard. On top of being very expensive, it’s also massive in physical size.
Poe Dameron Omnibus
This collection of comic books tells some of Poe Dameron’s adventures, from former Republic pilot to eventually being handpicked by General Leia Organa to lead a squadron on an important and top-secret mission that involves the rudest protocol droid in the universe, C-3PO.
