What is the Alliance System
The Alliance System in SWTOR was introduced with the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion. By completing various missions, you gain new allies. Often those would be your old personal companions. Some missions serve as prerequisite to others.
How to unlock the Alliance System
To gain access to this system and start recruiting new allies and companions, you need to first build the Alliance itself. You do this during Chapter IX of Knights of the Fallen Empire.
Knights of the Fallen Empire is part of the story progression for every character, and you cannot skip it. If you opt to start a new character using a token, you will have this story auto-completed and still gain access to the Alliance missions.
Chapter IX brings you to Odessen, where you will establish your base of operations. You have everything you need on Odessen. It was planned to serve as a social hub, similar to what the Imperial and Republic Fleets were from the very start of the game.
When you land on Odessen for the first time, during Chapter IX, you will have a few objectives – mainly to help you familiarize yourself with the new base and your primari contacts.
You will have to talk to the key people who will help you build the Alliance by giving you missions and suggestions.
You will have to make a few choices and give a couple of speeches during Chapter IX. While the choices do have some minor consequences for the future, they do not matter much for the purpose of unlocking and building your Alliance. You will unlock it anyway no matter what you choose.
After a long cinematic, you will finally regain control of your character on the main platform of the already built Odessen base. Your next few tasks will involve roaming around the base while your allies explain what’s what and introduce you to the some of the leaders of the alliance that will serve as quest givers later.
Odessen Map Layout Overview
The developers built a lot on Odessen. The planet is the starter point of a lot of missions. In this guide, we will turn our attention to those ones that are part of the core of the Alliance System.
Alliance Landing
The Landing platform is the entrance to every other hub on Odessen. This is where you will first spawn on the planet, not only during Chapter IX, but every time you come back to Odessen in the future. This is an open world area. You will encounter other players here.
In the top right, you have a few terminals where you can pick up Heroc missions, weeklies for PvE and PvP.
To the south, is the Cantina. In the bottom right of the Landing platform, is an elevator that will take you to several other zones for questing purposes. At the entrance of that tunnel, are the NPCs that will give you your Star Fortress missions later on.
In the bottom left is the entrance to the Alliance War Room and the Alliance Camps area.
Alliance Camps
The Alliance Camps area is where you will pick up nearly all of the Alliance missions, discuss events with companions and specialists and access your ship should you need to do that in the old conventional way – by walking to it.
This is a private area for your character. You will not encounter other players in the Alliance Camps.
Here are the key locations you would need to remember for this map:
Name | Role | ||
---|---|---|---|
1 | Dr. Oggurobb | Science and Research lead specialist | |
2 | Sana-Rae | Force Enclave specialist | |
3 | Admiral Aygo | Military Operations specialist | |
4 | Hylo Visz | Underworld Logistics specialist | |
5 | Entrance to your personal ship | Transportation | |
6 | Companion Locator Terminal | Bring back classic compations |
Companion Locator Terminal
From the War Room, on the way to Underworld Logistics, you can access a small room with a datapad on the left side and a large terminal on the right.
At first the datapad will give you a few missions that will auto-complete as part of your objectives from Chapter IX. Later on, you will be able to pick up some auto-completing missions for increasing the Influence with your Alliance Specialists.
The Companion Locator Terminal is a tool you can use to bring back your personal companions ahead of the time when you will actually encounter them through the story.
They will be able to assist you in combat, but they will not take part of any story until you reach the natural point where they will return.
Unless you have a very strong desire to have a certain personal companion at your side, I recommend you don’t use that terminal. It may ruin your immersion, and it will certainly lessen the surprise factor when you get to meet some of them through their own story arcs in the post-KOTFE narrative.
How to build your Alliance
Opposing the might of the Eternal Empire is not something that one can do alone. One of your major underlying goals throughout the Knights of the Fallen Empire story epic and after it is to build an Alliance capable of loosening and even breaking the Eternal Empire’s grip over the galaxy.
Here are the main paths for you to do that, utilizing the Alliance System:
Recruit Companions From Other Classes
As you seek to build your Alliance, you will meet a host of characters, both new faces and old friends, including many of the origin class story Companion characters. In most cases, these Companions can potentially be recruited by members of any class, though some Companions may be less willing than others to so readily overlook old grudges.
Choices that Matter
Just as in the Knights of the Fallen Empire Chapters (and in some cases moreso), your decisions within Alliance content can have a considerable impact upon story outcomes. As a result of your actions, Companions may be rejected, rendered unavailable, or even killed.
The New Star Fortress Flashpoint
Make contact with local resistance cells on six of the core worlds, aiding their local efforts to rid their worlds of the Eternal Empire’s Orbital Star Fortresses. Assault the Star Fortresses over each world once you’ve established local support!
Companions and Contacts Window Overview
The Companions and Contacts window was introduced with Update 4.0 and the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion. This is your main hub for everything related to your companions and Alliance contacts.
On the left-hand side, you have a list of all of the NPCs involved in the Alliance. At the very top, are the Alerts, which we will discuss in more details later. Here you will find all of your companions as well.
When you click on an NPC, you will see a brief bio on the right with a couple of buttons, depending on who you have selected. You can use this window to quick travel to the locations of these NPCs by clicking on the name and using the button “travel to contact” in the top right (if the button is available at the time).
From here, you can also call for your companions to come and accompany you. You can monitor your companions’ progress and influence you are building with each one.
For the Companions you can use for crafting and as active support in combat, you will see stats when hovering over the purple Influence bar in the top right. These are the bonus stats you gain from the specific companion at the current Influence level.
How Alerts work
Contacts will occasionally proactively notify you of special Mission opportunities by sending you an Alliance alert. These appear under the “Alerts” header of your Companions & Contacts window. The window is accessible via a keyboard shortcut or from the main menu, under Content.
Clicking on an alert entry will bring up details about the alert, and allow you to embark upon the alert Mission.
When you elect to start an Alliance alert Mission, in addition to being placed on the Mission, you will be automatically transported to the starting location for that Mission.
Many of the Alerts have prerequisites before a specific alert pops up. They all require you to complete KOTFE’s Chapter IX. Most of the alerts also require you to finish “To Find a Findsman” mission, which involve Yuun.
Once you start an Alert, it will be placed as a mission in your mission log, under the “Alliance” tag.
Alliance missions feature what the developers calls “Classic Conversation” format, which may look strikingly familiar to fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
These conversations use a distinct letterboxing format and font styling to set them apart visually. They are further characterized by their more character-centric nature, both in terms of storyline and cinematography.
Story character narrative lines in classic conversations are fully voiced as you have come to expect from this game. Player responses in classic conversations are presented as a list of response options, displayed in full (as opposed to in paraphrases), and are not voiced.
While this “KOTOR-like” style is cool and nostalgic, it is also a bit of a lazy move on the devs’ part. Over the years more and more alliance alerts were added an all of them use this system.
This way of voicing only the responses of the NPCs saves both time and money for the developers, but it kind of robs the game from its immersion.
SWTOR put the bar so incredibly high when it comes to cinematics and voice-overs that it felt like they shot themselves in the leg with the introduction of this way of interacting with characters during Alliance Alerts.
Allies Specialist Rewards and Influence Ranks
While completing missions and alerts for the Alliance and recruiting new companions, you will also earn unique crates that you can hand to each of the Alliance Specialists. Trading with the Alliance Specialists will grant you rewards and increase their Influence rank.
Locked Supply Crate | Specialist | Influence | Rewards |
---|---|---|---|
Alien Research | +500 per Crate | Gear + Gift(s) | |
Ancient Artifacts | +500 per Crate | Gear + Gift(s) | |
Military Equipment | +500 per Crate | Gear + Gift(s) | |
Smuggled Goods | +500 per Crate | Gear + Gift(s) |
Check your in-game mail often. The messages you receive are not only world-building lore, but sometimes you may find Supply Crates attached too.
Upon opening the Locked Supply Crates, you will find a piece of gear and one or two companion gifts.
As you gain Influence with the Specialists, you will receive rewards. To pick them up, go to the small room where the Companion Locator Terminal is located in the Alliance Camps and interact with the datapad on top othe crate on the left.

Alliance Alert Walkthroughs
For the majority of the Alerts, you do not need to complete them in the order I present below. Some of them require you to have completed another or several others, but for the most part, you have the freedom to choose what to do and when.
Every alert listed below requires you to complete Chapter IX from Knights of the Fallen Empire. If there are any other requirements, they will be listed accordingly in each segment.
When I mention “class” in regard to a companion’s origins, I am referring to the main class origin story, not the combat style.
I am currently in the process of updating this section with new and up-to-date information about each Alert. If you spot a mistake or I have forgotten something, please leave a comment below or reach out on info@vulkk.com or alex@vulkk.com.
To Find a Findsman (Yuun recruitment)
To Find a Findsman not listed as an Alert. It is given to you during Chapter IX. It is listed as an optional mission in your mission log, under the Alliance tag, because the entire Alliance System and all Alerts are optional. You can continue playing through Chapter X of KOTFE and entirely skip all Alerts.
This is a prerequisite for almost all other Alerts to appear. You have to recruit Gand Yuun first.
I highly recommend that you complete this mission as soon as you get it, to make sure you are not missing out on any other future Alliance Alerts.
Completing To Find a Findsman, immediately unlocks a number of Alerts (before you complete Chapter X) and a lot more as you progress through Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne.
Privateer Englistment (Paxton Rall recruitment)
Privateer Enlistment is a short cinematic cutscene where you meet Paxton Rall. He offers his services.
You have an opportunity to learn more about him and decide to recruit him or now. If you recruit him, he will become a regular companion.
Paxton Rall was originally given to players as a reward for being an active subscriber at the end of 2018. Currently, you can recruit him by purchasing his mission from the non-Seasonal vendor on the Fleet. Note that the vendor’s offerings rotate and that specific mission is not available all the time. You have to check frequently for it. It costs 5 Galactic Seasons Tokens.
There are no prerequisites to this mission. You will see it as an Alert as soon as you complete Chapter IX, or as soon as you purchase the unlock from the vendor.
The Light Triumphant (Master Ranos recruitment)
Master Dazh Ranos was first released in early access to players who participated in the original Dark vs Light event during the summer of 2016. Currently, Master Ranos is past of the rotation on the non-Seasonal vendor on the Fleet.
There are no prerequisites to this mission. You will see it as an Alert as soon as you complete Chapter IX, or as soon as you purchase the unlock from the vendor.
Darkness Rising (Darth Hexid recruitment)
Similar to Master Ranos, Darth Hexid was originally a promotional reward. Currently, you can unlock her Alliance Alert, Darknes Rising, by earning the achievement “With A Little Help From My Friends”, filed under Flashpoints > General in the Achievements tab in your Legacy window.
The Forgotten Trophy (Major Pierce recruitment)
To start The Forgotten Trophy, you need to have completed To Find a Findsman first. Talk to Major Pierce on Dromund Kaas to recruit him. He will demand that you first prove your worth by play 20 Unranked Warzone matches (wins count x2).
Death Before Dishonor (Xalek recruitment)
To unlock Death Before Dishonor, you must first complete To Find a Findsman. This mission takes you to Ilum where you will meet Xalek, one of the original Inquisitor companions.
You will have an opportunity to recruit him or not. If you play as an Assassin or Sorcerer, you will have unique dialogue with Xalek as he will recognize you.
Death Before Dishonor WalkthroughFreedom Fight (Bowdaar recruitment)
To unlock this one, first complete To Find a Findsman. To start Freedom Fight, head to the Platform 6 Cantina and talk to Bowdar. He will ask you to fight and complete The Eternal Championship.
The Eternal Championship is a series of ten arena fights against unique opponents. You can defeat them on your own or with a friend. You can also pick up some additional quests from the nearby terminal.
Arma Rasa (HK-55 recruitment)
To unlock Arma Rasa, you must first complete To Find a Findsman. The Alert is given to you by Dr. Oggurobb.
Your task is to assist HK-55 in fine-tuning his approach to combat by solving for him a few combat scenarios. You have to point at various targets and tell the droid to shoot or spare them.
Arma Rasa WalkthroughAfter you complete this mission, you may get a new one automatically – Shroud of Memory. This is a bonus chapter that was originally a subscriber reward. Currently, you can purchase the mission from the Cartel Market. This item grants you access to both missions: Arma Rasa and Shroud of Memory.
Mixological Profiling (Nico Okarr recruitment)
Mixological Profiling is a short cinematic mission that allows you to recruit Nico Okarr. This is one of the most famous characters from the early days of SWTOR.
Nico’s first appearance was in the Return trailer for SWTOR. He was first accessible as a recruitment option to players who were subscribed in April 2018. Currently, you can unlock Nico’s recruitment mission by purchasing the Encrypted Lockbox from the Seasons Vendor on the Fleet, Jaleit Nall.
The vendor’s stock rotates each week. The Encrypted Lockbox costs 5 Galactic Seasons Tokens and is included in Stock Group A.
Talk to Nico in the Platform 6 Cantina on Zakuul (the same one where you spoke to Bowdaar and started The Eternal Championship). Nico will ask you to mix him a drink. Don’t forget the little umbrella.
A Kindly Old Monster (Dr. Lokin recruitment)
Complete To Find a Findsman to unlock A Kindly Old Monster. Head to Alderaan and talk to Dr Eckard Lokin. You will find him in his estate.
To be able to complete this mission, you will need to venture into the Rakghoul tunnels. This is only possible during the Rakghoul Resurgence event.
A Kindly Old Monster WalkthroughFighting Power with Knowledge (Talos Drellik recruitment)
Fighting Power With Knowledge becomes available after you complete To Find a Findsman. Talos Drellik is a familiar face to Inquisitor players. He is one of the original companions to the Sith Inquisitor.
Head to Yavin 4 and talk to Talos Drellik. He will need your assistance in obtaining a few artifacts scattered across the Yavin 4 map.
Fighting Power With Knowledge WalkthroughThis mission unlocks Reclaimed Treasure, one of the best Alliance Alert Missions in my opinion.
Stalking the Score (Qyzen Fess recruitment)
Stalking the Score is unlocked after you complete To Find a Findsman. In this mission, you will meet and attempt to recruit Qyzen Fess, one of the original companions for the Jedi Concular.
To complete Stalking the Score, you have to find certain trophies for Qyzen to achieve Influence rank 10with him. The first option is to hunt down Worthy Jagannath Targets on Hoth. The second option is to defeat Heroic World Bosses.
Defeating any three of the following world bosses will yield large amount of Influence when defeated (only once per boss):

The First | Dromund Kaas | |
Subject Alpha | Taris | |

Little Boss (Blizz recruitment)
Little Boss unlocks after you complete Chapter X from Knights of the Fallen Empire and you also need to complete To Find a Findsman.
The mission is available to all classes from both factions, but if you are a Bounty Hunter, there will be a few unique dialogue lines, and you will be able to skip the very first objective. More details on all these, you can find in our full walkthrough, linked below.

If you are a Sith Warrior (Broonmark is one of the classic companions in this origin story), you will be able to convince the Talz to join you without spilling blood. For all other classes, you can only convince him to join if you allow him to spill blood. The other option is to reject him, of course.
The Last of His Kind WalkthroughRecruiting Shae Vizla (Shae Vizla recruitment)
The Alliance Alert pops up after you complete Chapter XIV from Knights of the Fallen Empire. She appears in the story during the chapter, but decides to join you after you complete the chapter.
The alert is a short KOTOR-style conversation where she informs you of her decision to join you. After this, you will be able to use her as an active companion.
Shining in the Darkness (Guss Tuno recruitment)
Shining in the Darkness becomes available after you complete Chapter XV from Knights of the Fallen Empire and also complete To Find a Findsman. You also need to complete Little Boss, because Blizz will join you on this mission.

Back in the Fold WalkthroughStar Fortresses
Star Fortresses are Zakuul Empire facilities that are placed into the orbit of a conquered planet. These act as surveillance and deterrence as they contain a Skytrooper factory and the ability to unleash the power of the artificial sun that powers them, destroying the planet if necessary.
In this series of combat Missions you will make contact with resistance leaders across six of the origin game worlds (Alderaan, Belsavis, Hoth, Nar Shaddaa, Tatooine, and Voss), helping them to fight back against the Eternal Empire, culminating in a final assault against the Orbital Star Fortresses installations in orbit above their worlds.
The Star Fortress Flashpoint itself is unique in the way it uses a variable approach to gameplay, producing a large amount of variation between different runs of the Flashpoint. These layouts also include randomized bonus objectives and mini-bosses, which reward players with Influence as well as Achievements. You might also get some rare loot too!
We have an in-depth guide to the Star Fortress detailing difficulty modes, bosses, map layouts and everything else you need to know before you run through them.
Our dedicated guides to Achievements and Decorations will give you more strong reasons why you should play Star Fortresses.
This entire final segment, titled “Changes to Companions after 4.0”, is part of the original guide I wrote back in 2015. I left it here as it may serve as a refresher or a reintroduction to an old veteran returning to the game after many years of absence.
After the events of Knights of the Fallen Empire digital expansion, you lose nearly all of your classic Class Companions and have to play through various storylines to see them return to you. You will also encounter and have the opportunity to recruit companions from other classes’ stories and brand new characters as well.
Most of this is done via Alliance Alerts, part of the Alliance System in SWTOR, which was introduced with KOTFE, update 4.0. You first experience it after completing Chapter 9.
Why BioWare changed the Companions System
The original way companions worked in SWTOR was very limiting. Everyone had their own set of abilities and was only able to fulfill one role. This was causing trouble and forcing players to only use one or two specific companions, because of the way they performed next to their own characters.
An example would be me on my Sentinel and the companion Doc – Doc was originally a healer and has saved my a** countless of times in tough situations. I am lucky I liked his personality and I didn’t mind spending the majority of my time with him.
However, I’ve always wanted to play with Lord Scourge. This is a companion that’s brimming with backstory and is involved in numerous events around the Galaxy leading up to his meeting with the Jedi Knight and coming their companion.
One of our biggest design goals with the new Companions system is to try and eliminate as much as possible the artificial barriers that prevent you from playing with the Companions you want, when you want, and how you want.
Companions also behave differently while active during a cinematic cutscene. They may approve or disapprove and react in their own way when they hear or see you do something.
BioWare wanted to come up with a solution that made sure the Companion system has both the versatility, and expandability necessary to keep up with your desires to have bolder, more meaningful choice options, as well as to fully utilize the incredible storytelling potential of Knights of the Fallen Empire’s episodic narrative.
Companion System Changes explained
With the release of Game Update 4.0, all Companion characters are able to switch between all three primary combat roles. When summoned, a Companion’s portrait will display an icon signifying their current combat role. The combat role can be changed at any time (provided you are not currently in combat) by right clicking on their portrait, and selecting a new role.
When a Companion’s combat role is changed, their ability bar will fully swap out for their updated role’s abilities.
This change is huge in terms of addressing the first goal of removing Companion usage barriers. Now nothing stops you to play with your favorite companion and still have them fill the role you need them to.
Of course, there are downsides from a role-playing point of view. All companions lose a bit of their identity this way. My favorite Doc is not “the medic” in my team. All of my companions can play that role.
Beyond lowering barriers, though, this change is also extremely important for storytelling purposes. Now that any Companion can fill any role, BioWare no longer has to endure situations where they can’t allow serious consequences to befall certain Companions, just because it might leave a player with no other Companion that can fill a given role.
We have seen this happen after KOTFE with a number of companions. Often you have the choice to recruit them or reject them and even fight them.
Companion Gear is purely for Aesthetics
When I was playing my first character back in December of 2011 I struggled a lot when the game forced me to play a companion in the final boss encounter of the storyline. I had not used that companion… ever.
They were not geared up at all and back then even 10k Credits was a high cost, so I had to grind money for about two days, get the gear this companion needed and then face the boss. The game was not so easy back then.
With the release of KOTFE and 4.0 companions no longer need gear. They level up together with you and their performance increases based on their affection level with you.
Gear for companions is now purely an aesthetics choice.
There is a huge difference, however, between an Influence Rank 5, for example, and Influence Rank 50. A fully leveled up companion can complete missions quicker, craft quicker and better and performs better in combat as well.
The simple reality is that, more often than not, the need to gear Companions has wound up being more of a cumbersome hindrance – not to mention a significant barrier to Companion use – than a source of meaningful or satisfying Companionship and progression.
As far as Companion combat performance goes, all Companions now have baseline combat stats that automatically scale with your character level. This means that no matter which Companion you summon, no matter how long it has been since you last summoned them, they will always be able to at least perform at an adequate baseline level.
As a result of the companions no longer needing gear, their overview tab now looks differently – it has fewer slots to put gear – only the items that matter for their visual appearance.
How Influence works in SWTOR
With Game Update 4.0, Companions no longer have “Affection”, they instead have “Influence”. If you have played the game before 4.0 and return just now, your old companions Affection has been converted into Influence.
The total level cap for Influence is now 50. Affection capped at 10.
Affection was a measure of how much a given Companion likes you. It used to fluctuate up and down as you make decisions that the Companion does and does not like.
When you make decisions with a Companion now, whether that Companion likes or dislikes the decision you’ve made, you will still build Influence with them (as your decision still has a narrative story Influence over them in some way).
Just because Influence goes up, it does not mean that the character necessarily likes you more, or that they don’t disagree with your decisions. A character with which you have an incredibly high Influence score may still despise you, make it known in conversation, and then act upon their dislike of you when the opportunity arises. The role-playing aspect of this is preserved.
Companion gifts still work, they’ll just grant Influence instead of Affection. In fact, in almost all cases they’ll now grant more Influence than they would have granted Affection. The devs made the following three tweaks to gift values and their mechanics:
- The base value of all gifts has been increased by 33%.
- Blue (Prototype) gifts have had their value increased by an additional 20%. Now Blue (Prototype) gifts are exactly twice as effective as Green (Premium) gifts, and half as effective as Artifact (Purple) gifts.
- Gifts of a given rank last much longer before their values start degrading, and they now degrade more slowly when they do start to degrade.
Basically, gifts will give more than they used to, you’ll be able to use gifts of a given rank longer than you could before.
The whole Influence vs Affection change may sound a little odd at first, but it supports in the game’s design and focus on story and therefore serves your needs as a player much more efficiently as well.
How Influence affects Companion Power
In a way, Influence kind of functions like “relationship XP” with your Companion. As you build Influence with a Companion, your Influence rank will increase. Every time a Companion’s Influence ranks up, that Companion gains a scaling bonus to Presence (which increases Companion damage, healing, and health), as well as bonuses to crew skill time efficiency and critical rate.
For example: when converted into Influence, 10,000 Affection (the cap for the old system) is exactly enough Influence to hit Rank 10, which equates to +500 Presence, +15% Crew Skill Time Efficiency Bonus, and a +5% Crew Skill Critical bonus.
Each point of Presence provides percentage based bonuses, instead of flat numerical bonuses. This more or less translates into two things:
- Companions of low level characters with massive Presence bonuses from their legacies will no longer be hilariously overpowered
- Presence scales better at higher levels.
Companion Inherent Tradeskill Bonuses Removed
With the launch of Game Update 4.0, all Companion-specific bonuses to tradeskill performance were removed. These bonuses were kind of nice in that they added some texture and variety to Companions, but ultimately they were very problematic and restricting for players.
In many situations they created a single Companion who was and would always be “the correct choice” for any given type of job. This meant that the optimal play was to simply pile one Companion with all the jobs, leaving your others idle.
This became doubly problematic when your “correct” crafting choice also happened to be the Companion you most wanted to have with you on your galactic adventures.
The removal of these bonuses allows endgame players to work towards having a stable of maxed Companion characters that can tackle all the tough work optimally and in parallel.
