We’ve tested every SWTOR companion in every role and analyzed the data. Here’s everything you could possibly want to know about companion roles and performance.
Best Companions for Each Role
Based on our testing, the overall best companion in the game is Altuur zok Adon, owing to his Marked ability. While he only has standard tanking capabilities, he offers some of the highest DPS and healing available, though you’ll need to pull your own weight if you want to do well with him.
Unfortunately, he was the main reward in Galactic Season 1 and is currently unobtainable, but you do have some very competitive alternatives, all of which are accessible to everyone:

Tank | Damage | Healer | Filters |
|---|---|---|---|
Blizz | Altuur zok Adon | Altuur zok Adon | Overall |
T7-01 | B3-S1 | Z0-0M | Overall |
Shae Vizla | Overall | ||
ISO-5R | Overall |
For DPS or tank, B3-S1, Shae Vizla, and ISO-5R (Cartel Market) are your best options. Bessie and Shae aren’t in the same league as Blizz and T7-01, but it’s still going to be insanely hard to rip aggro from them. ISO-5R is closer to Blizz and T7’s performance level.
While Z0-0M does crush everyone else when it comes to keeping people alive (besides Altuur), and healing values are pretty comparable across the board, K1-Z3N, Kira Carsen, Tuk’ata, and Veeroa Denz are slightly above average.
The Tuk’ata is your only solid option if you want capable healing and tanking in a single companion, though as a beast that is native to Korriban, you will have a hard time justifying its use as a Republic player.
The absolute worst companion in the game is Treek, without a doubt. Her output is low across the board, likely owing to the fact that all of her abilities are unique. Maybe the devs are trying to make a statement about Return of the Jedi…
Test Methodology and Observations
We’ll be discussing our test methodology and observations based on role. Most of our testing comes from 7.5 but we’ve rechecked some samples in 7.8 and have concluded our data remains accurate.
All companions were tested with rank 50 influence and on toons with 4,005 presence, though there is slight variation in presence values for some of the pre-KotFE companion tests, like Torian Cadera with his Techstaff for Bounty Hunters and switching to a Sniper Rifle for KotFE.
In general, most companions perform the same as one another because they use a shared pool of abilities based on their class. We’ve opted to rate companions relative this Standard performance.

*Some of the tank companions have very low threat generation but vastly superior survivability. Since the survivability doesn’t do much if nothing is hitting them, we still think their overall performance is Poor, but it would be misleading to ignore this crucial fact.
**A couple companions have variable best gifts depending on whether you have them from the class story or got them back during or after KotFE. Their Best Gift 1 refers to the optimal gift for them before KotFE and their Best Gift 2 refers to the optimal gift after you get them back. The rest of the companions’ Best Gifts 1 and 2 are universal.
Tanks
Our testing examined survivability, threat generation, and damage output for the tank role. We tested threat generation and DPS against the dummy and survivability against the FR3-DOM Prototype, an Elite (gold) enemy at Kessan’s Landing on Ord Mantell, measuring time to die (TTD).
Survivability is generally pretty standard. The vast majority of companions lasted a little over a minute (70s avg), but a few from the Cartel Market lasting almost twice as long (118s avg).
There is some variability from companion to companion, but this is likely caused by variance from sources like exact timing on enemy vs companion ability activation as well as luck with defense and shield chances.
The more notable disparity in survivability (like 1 min vs 2 min TTD) seems to be caused by a much stronger absorb shield on their single-target taunt abilities. As best we can tell, this stems from higher Standard Health Percent multipliers and Healing Power Coefficients.
Regardless of the cause, the companions with the best tank survivability include the Wampa, K’lor’slug Soldier, Nathema Voreclaw, and Ginx, but survivability isn’t the whole story.
There is a pretty wide spread in terms of tank DPS, like some do twice as much damage as others, but in absolute terms, we’re only talking about a difference~2.5k DPS max. Survivability and threat generation are far more significant considerations for a tank companion.
Tanks have a ton of variability in terms of threat generation, which enables them to keep aggro. Lower damage output makes it harder to generate threat, but the two don’t go hand-in-hand.
In this department, many companions are downright worthless, while some are an order of magnitude better at keeping aggro than average. We’re talking roughly <50k vs ~500k vs 1500k+ TPS here.
The best tanks are usually non-humanoid droids, many of which come from the Cartel Market, but the absolute best tanks in the game are T7-01 and Blizz. The worst tanks are often the humanoid characters.
The worst tank companions all use a single lightsaber, vibrosword, dualsaber, electrostaff, or collar; so, the issue with poor threat generation is likely tied to those weapon proficiencies or shared abilities.
Unfortunately, all of those tanks with the highest survivability use collars, so they have some of the lowest threat generation. Your Wampa will be able to live longer, but it won’t matter because you’ll still be the one getting hit.
That being said, it’s misleading to lump them together with any of the other tank tiers, so we have opted to label them as Poor*.
DPS
Our DPS testing focused on single-target performance by measuring TTK and DPS against the Operations Training Dummy with the Armor Reduction Module and Training Dummy Basic Health Modulator (2 mil HP).
There is some variability in DPS numbers, but this is mainly due to luck. We did a larger number of tests with Lana Beniko and found her sample trials varied between 10.6k and 11.8k, just like we saw with standard DPS as a whole.
Dual wielding DPS companions do perform slightly better at DPS than their single weapon-wielding compatriots, but the difference is very minor and should not be a serious consideration for which companion you choose to use. It’s probably just something related to offhand damage.
DPS companions also have some variability in hard stun duration. Most companions in DPS mode have a stun that lasts 5s, except for lightsaber wielders (regardless of type), which have a hard stun that only lasts 4s.
Many DPS companions don’t generate threat. This is really nice for keeping them alive because you have DCDs at your disposal and more HP. It also means you don’t have to worry about them luring a straggler out of your DoT spread.
Each companion has an AoE ability; most of them are weak, but a few are insanely powerful. These singular powerful AoE abilities are typically responsible for divergent DPS numbers and the popularity of companions like Bessie and Shae as DPS.
The absolute best DPS companions in the game are Altuur zok Adon, B3-S1, ISO-5R, and Shae Vizla. The worst DPS companions tend to be beasts from the Cartel Market.
Healers
Our healer testing measured HPS, EHPS, and DPS in a duel where the player was constantly below maximum HP. We did not see a relevant disparity between HPS and EHPS. We also made sure to factor in the Trauma debuff since it’s a duel.
Healer companions are the most standardized out of the bunch, likely owing to fewer ability variants and the devs paying closer attention to the balance for the most popular companion role.
All the best healers have unique or additional abilities, and there is no pattern to the few bad healers, at least that I can see.
Healer DPS is also fairly consistent, but only poor performance is mirrored, so a bad DPS companion will deal bad damage as a healer, but a good DPS companion usually doesn’t offer above average damage output as a healer.
The absolute best healer companions are Altuur zok Adon and Z0-0M, with K1-Z3N, Kira Carsen, Tuk’ata, and Veeroa Denz being distant runners-up. Altuur can offer much higher damage potential, but Z0-0M can still beat him in raw HPS.
Cartel Market Companions
Companions from the Cartel Market offer different performance compared to the rest. It’s unclear if this is deliberate or incidental.
It would be bad if you had to pay for the best companion performance (P2W), but that does not mean they need to be worse, either, and unfortunately, that is often the case.
Since all of them are also regular enemies, it’s safe to say this is just a nice byproduct of Broadsword’s ongoing visual modernization efforts for SWTOR, not necessarily a clear indication that they plan to sell more companions on the CM going forward.
Companions on the Cartel Market offer pretty consistent healing performance, but tanking and DPS are hit-or-miss, and the two usually go hand-in-hand. If a CM companion’s DPS is bad, their tanking is usually also gonna be bad.
Beasts as a “class” seems to be the culprit, with the exception of the Tuk’ata, possibly caused by something related to their unique Kolto Collar buff or Weapon Proficiency: Unarmed.
As DPS, beasts don’t have the ability to apply Sunder Armor, which makes enemies take 20% more damage from attacks that deal energy/kinetic damage, including all weapon damage. This debuff affects your own damage potential as well.
If beasts applied the Sunder Armor debuff, their DPS would be higher, but it isn’t enough on its own to standardize their performance. The other piece of their missing damage is more foundational because the lower damage output persists for tanks and healers.
Beast companions also seem to generate far less threat compared to other healers, which is a nice benefit even though their healing output remains standard.
The non-humanoid droid companions (probes, quadrupeds, like M1-4X) you can buy from the CM are consistently great tanks, and they often have unique animations. They also usually generate 4-5x threat from range compared to melee.
The best companions from the Cartel Market are:
Tank | Damage | Healer | Filters |
|---|---|---|---|
Tuk’ata | ISO-5R | Tuk’ata | Cartel Maeket |
ISO-5R | K1-Z3N | Cartel Maeket |
Again, other non-humanoid droids are also solid tanks, but that would make the list too long, and superior tank performance does not consistently correspond to DPS performance.
There has not been a new CM companion since 5.9 released in 2018, but their models did get silent visual upgrades sometime in 7.0 and continue to be sold.
The Bolraida was never released despite appearing as a deco with its source listed as the Plunderer Pack, coinciding with Update 4.4 and Chapter 13 of KotFE: Profit and Plunder, though the files weren’t added to the game until 5.9.
Ability Breakdown by Role
While they have weapon and alignment-dependent animations, companion abilities are generally standardized based on their role, so attacks may look different but do the same thing.
All companions have a Basic Attack and Passive toggle that stops them from fighting after they finish activating their current ability.
Tank
Tank abilities include single-target and AoE taunts, a gap closer that heals, an AoE attack that doubles as a DCD, and a triple pull. Threat generation covers such a wide range, but typical performance bands include <50k, 550k, and 1-4mil TPS (threat per second).
| Ability Name | Effect | Cooldown | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
Threatening Strike Threatening Strike | Gap closer that heals for 25% of damage dealt | 7.5s | Tank |
Personal Threat | Taunt that applies absorb shield | 12s | Tank |
Provoking Scream Provoking Scream | AoE taunt with 3m radius | 20s | Tank |
Ground Smash Ground SmashDetonator | AoE attack that grants companion 10s of 50% DR | 15s | Tank |
Mass Force Pull Multi-Grapple | Triple pull | 45s | Tank |
Tanks have the most variable performance out of the 3 roles. This is likely due to the greater number of ability variants. Some abilities have different names and the same icon while others have the same name and a different icon.
DPS
DPS abilities include a heavy hit, a DoT that applies the armor debuff, a finisher, a short-range AoE, and a hard stun. Typically, companion DPS deal ~11k DPS, which is roughly 33% of what a DPS player can do in single-target situations.
| Ability Name | Effect | Cooldown | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
Pummel Pummel | Immediate heavy hit | 7s | DPS |
Force Crush Electric Pulse Exhaustive Shot | 10s DoT that applies Sunder Armor for 45s | 14s | DPS |
Finishing Strike Finishing Strike Deadeye Shot | Sub-30% execute ability | 20s | DPS |
Whirlwind-Strike Whirlwind-Strike Thermal Grenade | AoE attack with 4m radius | 22.5s | DPS |
Force Stun Electro Dart | 4-5s hard stun | 45s | DPS |
Healer
Healer abilities always include an immediate heal, a HoT that doubles as a cleanse, a shell shield, a channeled heal, a mez, and a hidden ability that keeps them near you. The vast majority of companions heal for roughly 21k HPS, which is about 66% of single-target healing potential.
| Ability Name | Effect | Cooldown | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
Soothe Soothe Kolto Quick Scan | Immediate heal if target is below 80% HP | 10s | Healer |
Mending Mending | 9s HoT that cleanses you with each tick | 12s | Healer |
Protective Barrier Kolto Shell | 180s buff that heals you the next 6 times you take damage | 20s | Healer |
Enlivening Force Ameliorating Force Progressive KoltoScan | 3s channeled heal | 7.5s | Healer |
Force Detain Electro-Stasis | 10s mez on enemies if they’re above 90% HP | 45s | Healer |
| Instant leap to you if more than 20m away, not on quickbar | 4s | Healer |
Ardent Protector is a secret 6th ability that healer companions use as soon as they find themselves more than 20m away from the player. If you’re trying to kite something and your healer suddenly dies, this ability is probably the reason. There is no way to disable it.
Unique Abilities and Animations
Some companions have unique abilities and animations for specific roles, typically if that ability is tied to the story or if you have to do something special to acquire them.
A simple example is Eckard Lokin, who can transform into a Rakghoul or back to a human at will in the story and can continue to do so as a DPS or Tank companion.
Performance wise, those unique abilities are really hit-or-miss. Half the time, those abilities are really powerful and make them one of the best companions in the game. The other half of the time, those abilities are hot garbage and make them noncompetitive with their associated role.
