This guide will show you all crafting material requirements, tips on which components to upgrade first, and provide alternate ways to acquiring materials that don’t involve hunting in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

How Crafting Works in Black Flag Resynced

To access the Crafting menu, head to the Inventory menu. Below the gear is an anvil icon, select this to enter the Crafting Menu.

When you enter this menu, you’ll find second icons indicating what you can upgrade via crafting. Depending on your progress in the main story, some items may be locked out as you haven’t acquired their respective tools.

These affect the quantity of certain tools, their effectiveness, and the amount ammo available. You also have the Health Upgrade which will increase your maximum health.

Crafting Material Requirements

You’ll need animal components gained from hunting and harpooning. You’re not technically required to hunt animals to get these components, but it’s far easier to hunt them early on to make sure you get some key upgrades.

Smoke Bomb Pouch

This selection will increase the amount of Smoke Bombs you can carry. You start with a maximum of 3, but can achieve a maximum of 5 when fully upgraded. These are great to have if you need to make a getaway, or to assassinate a group of enemies mid-combat.

Pistol Holster

The Pistol Holster allows you to carry up to four pistols at a time. As your secondary weapon, this is an important item to craft upgrades for. You’ll upgrade it to Tier II during the early game quest “This Tyro Captain“.

Acquiring Animal Materials without Hunting or Harpooning

It’s understandable if you’re not entirely comfortable with killing animals for their skins and bones. Or maybe you don’t like harpooning sharks because they keep sinking your rowboat. Either way, there’s an alternative way to acquire animal materials.

General Stores offer various land and ocean wildlife components. Their variety starts out small, but you can increase their available components by upgrading the Great Inagua General Store.

By upgrading the General Store in Great Inagua, all other General Stores will have more stock to choose from. One thing to note about purchasing animal components from the General Store is that you can’t use reales to buy them. Instead, you’ll multiple bones per component desired.

Bones are dropped from land and ocean wildlife when hunted, but it’s not a guaranteed drop. If you want to acquire boned without killing animals, then you’ll need to build the Treasure Dealer at Great Inagua.

The Treasure Dealer sells bones for 1,000 reales a piece. While a bit pricey, it saves you the trouble of hunting and harpooning animals yourself. It’s especially useful if you can’t yet sail into more dangerous waters for rarer animals.

Which Upgrades to Craft First

There are three main components that you’ll want to upgrade first: the Pistol Holster, Pistol Ammo Pouch, and Health Upgrade. As you’re exploring and completing the main story, these will always be the most useful and consistent upgrades.

Having more pistols and bullets will allow you to more frequently quick fire your pistols to clear out ships you’re boarding. As most enemy sailors die in one hit from a pistol, this can quickly reduce moral so you can take over ships much sooner.

As you start boarding bigger ships such as Frigates and Man O’ Wars, you’ll be fighting a lot more enemies. Pistols alone won’t keep you alive, which is why you’ll need more health early on.

Boarding ships will be one of your primary ways of making money. The sooner you can more efficiently clear ships, the more money you can get to spend on bones for upgrading these core components even further.

You can upgrade the Smoke Bombs or Blow Pipe components at your leisure. While these are useful tools, their usefulness is rather small in comparison to your pistol and health upgrades.

If you like the harpooning mini-game, be sure to build a Fisherman’s Wharf on Great Inagua. This doubles the amount of skins gained from ocean wildlife (this does not affect land wildlife). Overall, your list of upgrade priorities should be:

  1. Pistol Holster
  2. Pistol Ammo Pouch
  3. Health Upgrade
  4. Smoke Bombs or Blow Pipe Components depending on preference
