There are more hidden secrets than buried treasure in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. We’ll show you many of the hidden references and secrets and share how you can find them yourself.
Great Inagua Rainbow
You can find a gorgeous view of multiple waterfalls and a rainbow on Great Inagua. It’s at (807,440) but the path to it isn’t easily noticed.
Go to the abandoned village south of the docks, this is the same area where two wild pigs are. Go south and look for a path going west, you’re on the right track if you see the opening through the rocks.
Jump across the rocky outcrops where the broken bridges are. This will take you to a chest and a view of the rainbow at the waterfalls.
Duncan Walpole’s Remains
You can find Duncan Walpole’s remains at Cape Bonavista (151,588). It’s easier to get here from the southern Viewpoint, but in the area you fought him there’ll be a blood trail going off to the side. You’ll be able to find his skeleton in the foliage in this area, but it can be a bit tricky to find.
Kraken Sighting
For a classic easter egg that was also present in the original version, you’ll need to go to Antocha Wreck in northwest Gibara and dive underwater.
When you exit the Diving Bell, swim to the left and look for the shipwreck. Swim into the cabin and a tentacle will pull away to the right. Follow the tentacle and stay near the window to start a cutscene of a giant squid fighting a sperm whale.
All’s Well That Ends Well
After capturing Fort Punta Guarico in the story mission “The Forts”, you’ll be able to visit a well at the Fort. Next to it is a Poorly Written To-Do List mentioning something about releasing the prisoners in the well.
Needless to say, this never happened and the prisoners are still stuck inside and will say things around every 10 seconds when you’re near the well. This can include:
- “Isn’t anybody going to help me?”
- “Anyone there? I’ve discovered the means to end all wars, but I’m not telling you!”
- “It’s a lovely day, isn’t it?”
- “Help!”
- “Hello? Is anyone up there?”
- “Would you kindly tell the Duke to cancel his Ball? All that dancing makes a terrible noise.”
- “Is it over yet?”
- “They’re just going to leave us here, aren’t they?”
- “Come on down! It’s my rat’s birthday party!”
Cannon Event
Another Fort related easter egg appears as you’re storming Fort Eleuthera. You can find a poor soldier who was headshot by a cannonball. His body is stuck to the wall as you storm the fort, but it will not be there after you’ve taken over the fort.
What A Maroon
There’s an unmarked island in Dry Tortuga at (473,822) where you’ll find a marooned priest giving a sermon to his “congregation”. He’s speaking both Spanish and Latin, but isn’t saying too unusual as he’s just proselytizing his faith.
The Black Pearl
During the quest Blackbeard’s Treasure, you’ll encounter pirate ships outside Anotto Bay also seeking to claim the treasure for themselves. Their names are randomly pulled from a pool of ship names, one of which can be the Black Pearl.
This is a reference to the iconic ship from Pirates of the Caribbean, the Black Pearl. It’s nothing too spectacular as it’s a rather weak 3-star frigate. It doesn’t have the Black Pearl’s iconic black hull or sails, but it’s still a fun nod to the franchise.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to sink it in order to progress with the quest. This is the day you will always remember as the day you probably killed Captain Jack Sparrow
Pyrates Beware
While on the topic of Pirates of the Caribbean, there’s another reference to this franchise on an unmarked island at (596,305). You’ll find a sign on an island reading “Pyrates Beware” along with three hanged men near it.
In the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow sees three hanged pirates next to a sign that says “Pirates Ye Be Warned”. This easter egg is a reference to this scene.
Skeleton Crew
Do you suddenly have the urge to have a crew of the undead after these Pirates of the Caribbean references? Well good news, you can do that! If you visit the Secret Island Vendor in northwest Gibara, you can acquire the Deceased Crew Attire for 206 bones.
My Cabbages!
If you go to Havana at (209,576), you’ll find a ruined cabbage cart with a woman on her knees mourning it. This is a reference to the “My Cabbages!” gag from Avatar The Last Airbender.
Free William
There’s a Free Willy reference in Arroyos in northern Castillo de Jagua. Go to the docks in the southeast and you’ll find a drunken fisherman for the local event “William the Whale”.
Talking to the man will reveal he has a whale friend named William that can be summoned when called by him specifically. You can then Call to William and a humpback whale will breach out of the water.
Cleanliness is next to Kenwayness
If you roll around in the dirt, Kenway will become visibly dirty as he has mud all over his face and clothes. You can jump into the water to wash it all away!
All Jacked Up
During the story quest “To Suffer Without Dying“, you’ll be able to find Jack Rackham’s skeleton in one of the cages at (594,129). You can tell it’s him as the skeleton has his headband and Kenway will make a remark about him.
His skeleton will only appear during this quest and it will be missing if you return here in the future.
Monkeying Around
There are a couple of Monkey Island references in Black Flag Resynced. These refer to Captain Mancomb Seepgood and LeChuck.
Mancomb Seepgood
The first Assassin Contract available in Nassau, “The Pirate Captain”, has you assassinate a captain known as Manbomb Seepgood.
Captain Mancomb Seepgood is a character in The Secret of Monkey Island. His unusual name is a play on the name of Monkey Island’s main protagonist, Guybrush Threepwood.
LeChuck Quote
During the main story quest “Black Bart’s Gambit”, you’ll commandeer a Portuguese Man O’ War. When you start fighting your way out, Captain Roberts will say “Nothing like the hot winds of Hell blowing in your face!”.
He’s quoting the undead pirate captain LeChuck from The Secret of Monkey Island. It’s another fun nod to this influential series.
Hexpectations for the Future
In the Rift Quest “True Purpose“, there’s a large cathedral in the background. Judging by the fact that there’s architecture referencing older games in the series such as Shadows, Odyssey, Mirage, and Valhalla, this is likely a reference to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe.
This looks like it could either be Magdeburg Cathedral or Würzburg Cathedral. Both cathedrals are located in Germany which is where Codename Hexe will take place as it involves the witch hunts going on during the 1500’s and 1600’s.
It’s hard to say which cathedral it is given how both of these cathedrals have been reconstructed one or more times in the past.
Singapore Shoutout
Many of the Assassin’s Creed games have been developed by Ubisoft Singapore, Black Flag Resynced is no exception. Singapore’s mascot is the Merlion which can be found as the Guardian Beast Trinket and Guardian Beast Figurehead.
Another and less subtle easter egg is seen at the shipwreck where you find the Guardian Beast Trinket. At (356,700) in Dry Tortuga, the ship’s cargo is a bunch of floating fruit that Kenway refers to as “rank”.
These are durians, the world’s smelliest fruit. Despite the horrible smell, its flavor is described as a sweet custard with hints of garlic and onions. It’s quite the unique fruit and is found in southeast Asia.
Where is Singapore? That’s right, southeast Asia! The ship that became this wreck was likely importing goods from Singapore which would have been an exceptionally long journey as the Panama Canal wasn’t made yet. The sailors will never see the fruits of their labor after such a long journey.
This Joke is Never Going To Let You Down
Last but certainly not least, Ubisoft Singapore has Rick Rolled us all. If you go to the Codex Database and go to the Sea Shanties, you’ll see a piece of sheet music used to represent all the shanties.
If you were to actually play this, it would end up playing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”. The sheet music is faded and has some ghosting, but if you adjust the contrast you can better see the comparison.
