You face EGO in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’s fourth Rift, True Purpose. We show you how to complete the quest and beat the boss.
How to unlock the Rift Quest
To unlock the True Purpose Rift Quest, you’ll have to finish Black Flag’s main story first. After the credits roll and you’re placed back on your ship in Great Inagua, a prompt will appear telling you the quest is available.
To start this quest, you have to travel to an unmarked island in Serranilla at (363,176). The fastest way to get here is to fast-travel to Fort Serranilla or Misteriosa, and sail east. You’ll soon find a small island with some ruins that contain the portal to access the Rift Quest.

How to Complete the True Purpose Rift
This quest centers around facing EGO in a boss fight, but first you have to defeat some regular enemies and make your way to the arena where EGO is waiting.
Unlike the three previous Rift Quests, this one doesn’t explore an alternate “what if” scenario. This is the culmination of EGO’s scheme to make you submit to their designs for peace through the loss of freedom.

But you’re not alone as allies are watching, and the Eagle will help you resist EGO and claim your rightful place among the order of Assassins.
EGO’s speech
Once you go through the portal and enter the Dark Animus, you’ll find yourself inside a theater that is very similar to the one Edward takes his children in the final cutscene of the game.
EGO will be on the stage giving a speech and will prompt you to join him. Do so and if you look around, you’ll see more users in the seats and most notably, if you look back and up, you’ll see three hooded figures watching from above. The frontmost figure has a striking resemblance to Ezio from Assassin’s Creed 2.

Eagle’s menu choices
Once you’re on stage, EGO will start going through the what if stories presented in the past three Rift Quests. But before they can continue their egomaniacal speech, the Eagle will appear and interrupt the proceedings.
A menu created by the Eagle will show on your screen. After the Eagle finishes talking, a new button will appear: “Fight Back.” Select it and the quest will continue. None of the other buttons or options inside this menu work.

Fight and climb sequence
Turn back to the seats, all users will be gone and enemies will start appearing and start attacking you. Dispatch this first wave of enemies and go backstage, but be mindful of the enemies shooting at you from the ramparts.
Once you’re backstage, go to the left and to the back. On the right side, you will find an elevator you can use to go up to the ramparts. Use the beams and ropes to make your way to the shooters and take them out. Use the “Human Shield” prompt as much as possible to make the combat easier.

When you’ve eliminated all enemies, you’ll find a hook you can use to get down from the ramparts. Using it will lift the background, exposing a hole in the wall that will take you to the arena where you’ll face EGO.

Before going into the boss fight strategy, I want to point out a couple easter eggs we can find in the arena where the fight takes place. Around the main circle where you fight EGO, you’ll see a group of 6 structures. These are references to Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, Mirage, and Shadows.
Most noteworthy among these structures is a cathedral up front that seems to be a teaser for the next Assassin’s Creed game, currently known by the codename Assassin’s Creed Hexe.

EGO.EMOTION.AGENT
This is a very “honest” fight, and by honest I mean that there are no special gimmicks to damage EGO.EMOTION.AGENT or to counter their attacks. This fight revolves completely around dodging and damaging them at any opening you get.
For this fight, EGO will take a physical form similar to El Tiburon but he’s faster and doesn’t have the armor you need to strip. He also employs a variety of area-of-effect attacks.

This is a Boss Fight with two phases, so when you’ve dealt enough damage there will be a small cutscene and EGO.EMOTION.AGENT will become more aggressive with some new attacks. Here’s a breakdown of all the moves in his repertoire so you can be ready for anything.
First Phase
We’ll start by going over their more mundane melee attacks. All of these attacks are unblockable, so you have to dodge out of their way. EGO can perform a simple attack combo where he can swing the axe from 1 to 3 times.
If you try to attack them while they’re not vulnerable, EGO will parry your attacks and try to counterattack with a horizontal swing.

If you stay close to them for too long, they will perform a simple kick attack to push you away, so be ready to dodge.

Now for their special moves, there are 4 different types they perform throughout the fight. Keep in mind that at any point during the fight EGO can teleport away or towards you to perform any of the attacks you can find in this guide.
First there’s a ranged attack they perform by slamming their axe on the ground, making a wave of stalagmites rise from the ground towards you in a cone shape. You have to dodge sideways to get out of their range.

Next is a melee area-of-effect slam attack. Ego will do a small jump and slam his axe back down to the ground creating a circle of stalagmites around them. The best way to dodge this attack is to dodge backwards, this move puts you right outside the attack’s range. A heavy attack will reach EGO while he recovers.

Their third special move is a ranged attack where they swing their axe horizontally and throw three rocks towards you. You can dodge these rocks by dodging sideways.

For their last special move during the first phase EGO summons 4 shields that float around them. Once they do, they will start spamming their 2 ranged special moves, so stay on your toes ready to dodge.

You can shoot these shields with your pistols and if you manage to break all 4, EGO will be stunned, giving you a wide opening to damage them.

Second Phase
Once you’ve dealt enough damage, there’ll be a small cutscene of EGO.EMOTION.AGENT powering up, after which their health bar will restore and they’ll be glowing a darker shade of red.

For the second phase, EGO retains all attacks available to them during the first phase and they have an additional 3 attacks they can perform now.
Two notable changes are that during this phase is that EGO will teleport a lot more, and the windup animation for the melee area-of-effect slam attack changes from a jump to floating.
The second phase always starts with EGO performing one of their new attacks where they summon 5 meteors that fly towards you. These are slow projectiles, so be careful of not dodging sideways too early.

Another of their new attacks is a melee axe attack where EGO spins and moves towards you. They really like using this attack after teleporting towards you, be careful and dodge backwards consecutively to avoid taking damage.

Their final special move is the most visually appealing. EGO will start levitating on the spot and a huge sphere will appear above them. A laser will shoot from this sphere on a straight line from EGO to you. Wait for the right moment and dodge sideways. This attack is usually performed after they summoned the 4 floating shields.

With this information at your disposal, you will defeat EGO, just be patient and go for safe damage openings. Most of their special attacks leave them open to counterattacks afterwards.
Quest Rewards
After exiting the Dark Animus you’ll be rewarded at last with the legendary Dark Animus Corsair Pistol Swords. These have a perk where killing enemies will damage nearby enemies.
