Learn the rules for Checkers, how and where to play it, and what rewards you get with this tavern game in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.
How to unlock Checkers in Black Flag Resynced?
You have to visit a tavern that has an NPC you can challenge. First, you must approach the bar and interact with the bartender. This will trigger a scene where some drunk men start a fight with Edward. After defeating them, you’ll be able to play in that tavern.

The thugs will surround you and approach you one by one, performing heavily telegraphed attacks, these you can try to parry.
The fastest way of incapacitating these enemies is to perform a sweep kick, if you’re playing with keyboard and mouse you can perform a sweep kick by pressing your “2” key, if you’re playing with a controller you have to hold-press your right trigger and press either “A” or “X” depending on your controller button layout.
There are three taverns where you don’t have to fight to unlock the mini-games: these are the ones in:
- Havana
- Nassau
- Great Inagua
The first two you visit as you go through the main storyline of the game. As for Great Inagua, you need to pay to restore the local tavern, which will unlock three different NPCs to play each of the tavern games.

Checkers
This is one of the world’s oldest board games, originating in ancient Egypt, with a modern version emerging in 16th-century France, which is the version that can be played in the game.
How to play Checkers
Each player starts the match with 12 pieces. The objective of the game is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces.

Pieces move diagonally forward and can capture opponent pieces by jumping over them. It’s possible to make multiple jumps in a single turn. Whenever one of your pieces can make a jump to capture an enemy, it’s mandatory to make that move.

If a piece reaches the opponent’s back row, it becomes a King and can now jump forward and backward.

To win, you have two options: either you capture all of your opponent’s pieces or leave them with no movement options.
In the case of the game stalling and both players repeating the same movement sequence, the NPC will offer to declare a draw, in which case you won’t lose or win any money.
Where you can play Checkers
The NPCs with whom you can play checkers are located in taverns around the map, and their difficulty depends on the number of stars they have. There are three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert.
- Beginner: Andreas Island (543,697)
- Intermediate: Havana (215,579)
- Expert: Gran Inagua (817,446)

Tips and Tricks
- Prioritize taking control of the center of the board with your first moves.
- Move your pieces in groups so you can protect them from getting captured.
- Whenever possible aim to transform a piece into a King, this is a game changer.
- Leave at least two pieces in your backline for as long as possible to prevent your enemy from getting a King.
- Be willing to sacrifice pieces to bait your opponent into unfavorable positions or to set up multiple jumps.
Money Rewards and Achievements
At the start of each game, you have to choose one of three wagers; the amount you will either win or lose depends on the difficulty of the NPC.

“I’ll wager my luck.”:
- Beginner: 100 Reales
- Intermediate: 200 Reales
- Expert: 300 Reales
“Aye, let’s see what you got.”:
- Beginner: 200 Reales
- Intermediate: 400 Reales
- Expert: 600 Reales

As for rewards for beating the tavern games, there’s only one achievement called “Grandmaster” with the condition: “Win at each of the different tavern games”. The other two tavern games are Fanorona and Nine-Man Morris, this means you can get the achievement by defeating each beginner NPC once.
